    Default Need suggestions

    Hi,
I have my BSNL dataone connection for more than a year.I got 2 modems default BSNL modem which i rarely used it and most of the time i use D-Link modem 502t and it performed well so far.Now the modem is burned by a lightining tunder which also affected my motherboard network port.So i now i got a new port with the help of a lan card that sits on one of the PCI.
As the D-Link modem burned i go for a new modem and i bought compex mrle which is quite new to the market.I tried it and configured as suggested by BSNL guy and it performs well but i got frequent disconnection and it needs a reboot at that time.Very annoying. But when i ask for help they are saying there will be noise in the phone line but with this same line i used DLink modem which worked perfectly. So i really got frustrated with compex.I really hate te website too they dont have any firmware details.i cant upgrade firmware which is essential.

So i decided to purchase a new modem and i need advice from this forum

First my choice is wired ADSL modem and the choice of modem is as follows
    1.Netgear
    2.D-Link
    3.Linksys

Tell me which is best and which provide decent speed.

Secondly if i have to go for wireless which is modem is best and what should i do to configure wireless modems. Also is there any other device i have to purchase in addition.

    Thank you for your response.

my suggestion is buy type IV wifi modem from BSNL for only Rs.1800 & it performs well for its price.if you want to go wireless either you have to buy a wireless modem which will cost at least 4000 for any good brand or you have to buy a wireless router along with a normal modem which will again cost 4000-5000 at least.

Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

    I second that.

But otherwise you can go for Linksys or Netgear. Make sure that you buy an ADSL2+ modem/router and not just a plain router.

Go for Linksys wrt54g. When buying any hardware check it out first at newegg.com

    Newegg.com - LINKSYS WRT54G IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Wireless-G Broadband Router - Wireless Routers

if you want to go for a new liksys then WRT54G is a good idea apart from that not to confuse you but netgear is also offering a good range of routers and netgear routers are really very user friendly and gives good performance...

Really amazed at the amount of response. All really helpful.
The linksys is offering many wireless modem/routers but i think it will be more easy to go with linksys WAG200G it has adsl modem inbuilt and costs 3500 only.
But if i go for WRT54G then i have to buy adsl modem also?
Please correct if iam doing anything wrong.

yes you are correct WRT54G model is just for internet sharing and dont have a built in modem, if you want to purchase WRT54G then you need to connect external modem with it to make it working or to connect to network.. i said linksys i s good coz it is one of best known brand in indian market..

WAG200G is a ADSL2+ router and really a good choice to for go.. if we compare these 2 router WRT54G and WAG200G then there is no match at all both are totally different routers

first try make you mind bro that what you need, do you need a router only or an modem router or an adsl2+ router..

modem is needed to connect to net using telephone line.router is like a switch/hub to distribute that net connection to multiple computers/laptops.

    Router

A Device which acts as an interface betweeen two networks.
It forwards packets based on IP addresses between your ISP's router and either your LAN or your single PC.
A router learns more about the networks to which it is connected and can be more selective about the packets it passes on.
A router can also select the best route for packets to take in large interconnected networks.

    Modem

Modem is a device that transmits and receives data over the plain old telephone system's (POTS) analogue lines.
It allows your PC to connect to your ISP using the Internet Protocol.
The modem acts as a "bridge" between your PC and your ISP.
The dynamic or static public IP address which your modem obtains from your ISP is passed on to your PC.
Modem forwards packets based on hardware level MAC addresses between your ISP's router (and the Internet) and your PC.

Modem Router is a router with built in modem

and just for additional knowledge term Modem taken from 2 words Modulator and demodulator which makes term Modem

I hope its clear now... if need more info please update all indiabroadband.net members are waiting to reply here
