Perhaps he can. He can inquire. But if they ask to pay the full price instead of differential price then it is better to go with an external device.

    @black_orchid
    for price comparison etc.
If your modem Type I is on rent ,you can surrender it. Get written ack.
    buy a Type IV modem.

@essbebe, that is what my doubt is. Will BSNL agree to take back an old modem and give a new (wi-fi) modem at a differential price of Rs. 600/-? If yes, then great. black_orchid should then go for a TYPE IV (and not TYPE II) modem.

Depends on the whims of the BSNL staff.
My friend exchanged mT882 ( outrightpurchase)
after one year ,for another same brand new modem free of cost !
There is another scheme: If you have paid rent for say 20 months 60 x 20= Rs 1200/=
You can buy the same modem less 50% ( Rs 600) rental paid . Info given in FAQ,s
    question 45 ?

see i understand i can purchase type II or type IV modem from bsnl itself.
however due to a mistake on my part i forgot to mention both these types are not available at the exchange near my house which caters to my connection.
so i am looking for alternatives which i may purchase which work well and which have inbuilt firewall etc.
also i wanted to know how much the speeds generally vary when a 256kbp/s
when being used wirelessly on ethernet i get good speeds of 30-35kbp/s for torrentz etc.i know the speeds should reduce but by how much is what i wanted to know.

PS: price range of the routers too pls if possible.

All wireless routers operate at a speed of 54 mbps. This is way beyond the ISP speed. So no worries on that. For prices check eBay India.

In my opinion you should a good ADSL modem+ Wi-Fi router from brands like Netgear or Linksys but they will cost a premium like around 3000/- rs or so but they will be worth and it will be a one stop solution

On the other hand if you are buying a wireless router only then you opt any router from brands like Netgear, Asus, Linksys etc and they will cost around 1500- 2000/- rs but then you have to configure them and arrange independent power for them.

    My Verdict
Why to use two appliances when a single appliance can do the job!, but then its your choice

i feel since you already have a wired router, just go for a wifi router without DSL.. plain wifi router.. as you already have a wired router doing the DSL job...
