    Default Correct settings but still "ppp down" message beetel 220bx with DataOne connection

    well, to save my installation charges, i decided to configure my old beetel 220bx modem from airtel with my new DataOne connection by myself. its been a week now since i've been trying, but i'm unable to get my 220bx modem running with BSNL DataOne connection

    let me tell you, i've followed every possible solution given in the forums.
    *tried vpi/vci:0/35
    *tried disabling and enabling dhcp
    *called customer care(was useless though)
    *tried automatic settings in PC
    *tried the manual settings

    yet no success

    and yes, all the LEDs on the modem are glowing
    but, in the router settings page, it shows status: Down

    i've entered correct uid and password (or else status would have been AUTHENTICATION FAILURE insted of DOWN )

    anyone to help??

    I faced exactly the same situation last week and my connection was done for 3 weeks. I used to get the same message:

    - PPP Down in case of PPPoE Configuration
    - Error 678 in case Bridge+Dialer

    Please read this thread: http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...ions-bsnl.html (My interactions with BSNL)

    It has the probable solution.

    @kanwar
    Sorry to hear you are still having trouble using Beetel220BX for BSNL BB connection.
    http://i21.tinypic.com/33osc9d.jpg
    Since you were already using Airtel BB I will make it brief.
    One small point : if you are trying in WAN page PPP/PPPoE
    user name do not use extension @ bsnl.in.
    Check Always On idle time 0
    Report what Diagnostics page shows. Ignore fail status for OAMF5 connection.
    Post ipconfig/all data.
    Screen shots: If you have the patience and time !
    Search " beetel" in tinypic.com.

    @just4kix
    so should i try changing my modem? maybe i get a new one from BSNL. what do you say?

    @essbebe
    i tried without @bsnl.in also, did not work

    sorry, but i'm not allowed to post links of screenshots as i've not made 15 posts yet

    but here is what diagnostics showed:

    TEST THE CONNECTION TO YOUR LOCAL NETWORK
    Ethernet: PASS
    USB: DOWN

    TEST THE CONNECTION TO YOUR DSL SERVICE PROVIDER
    ADSL Sync: PASS
    ATM OAM F5 segment ping: PASS
    ATM OAM F5 end to end ping: PASS

    TEST THE CONNECTION TO YOUR ISP
    Test ppp server connection: FAIL
    Test authentication with ISP: PASS
    Test the assigned ip address: FAIL
    ping default gateway: FAIL
    ping primary dns: PASS

    have you tried setting the modem to bridged mode.. and using the dialer in your windows OS.?? if not try that and see what error you are getting while connecting.. also ensure that the airtel vpi/vci is removed

    make sure that in your modem connection settings you have not entered an IP address.

    @superprash
    in bridged mode, i get the error 678. and yes, i did change vpi/vci to 0/35

    @whitestar
    i have the ip address and subnet mask entered under lan setup. but i dont think that may be a problem, as i was using airtel connection also, without any problem

    i think i should have stayed with airtel. its been 2 months since i applied for a new BSNL telephone and broadband connection. i think i made a wrong decision

    Normally OAMF5 will show fail for BSNL connection.
    1.In WAN settings have you selected the first option ATM/PPPoA? recheck. and enable ppp/PPPoE.
    2. You have not posted the Ipconfig/all data. just type the details here.
    Screenshots can be uploaded at tinypic.com and the link given here
    delete http www , and give tinypic.com/i12/34fptg.png etc.
    3. See you have enabled all in this page. Access control page.
    http://i6.tinypic.com/6ur7rd3.jpg
    for ref : http://i21.tinypic.com/33osc9d.jpg
    4.
    as i was using airtel connection also, without any problem
    This information, if correct, Only changing the VPI/VCI to 0 and 35 would have connected you to BSNL in Bridged Mode. and by entering userId/PW in wan page for
    always on connection.
    I have used Beetel 220BX and 220BX1 for more than two years programmed for BOTH BSNL and AIRTEL , and now using beetel110BX1 in same way and use Vonage VOIP on either connection. ( Setting all same for Beetel series except for addl menu options)
    5. Did you see the modem pages posted by me at tinypic.com search "beetel" ?

    6. Presume you have surrendered Airtel telephone connection .

    all the settings are same as you've mentioned in these pics.
    here is what ipconfig/all showed me:
    i34.tinypic.com/24fmcmo.jpg

    wan summary: i33.tinypic.com/2myq5j6.jpg

    wan info: i34.tinypic.com/2zh45xd.jpg

    i'll try my friend's modem today. lets see what happens. but i doubt its the problem with the line, and not with the modem

    anyways, thanks to all you guys who are trying to help me out. really nice place this is

    and i noted one more thing, the value for attenuation is about 50dB, and SNR value is around 16dB (downstream). are these values in the permitted range?

    Try opendns 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 ( in modem )
    In TCp/IP select obtain Ip address automatically.
    In TCp/IP enter OpenDNS.
    InTCP/IP check your ethernet card is enabled. ( top of page).
    In IE Tools/ Internet options there is an option " never dial a connection " check.
    What is the OS you use ?

    @kanwar, If you have read my post (link) carefully, you will observe that I personally thought that the modem was quite OK and there was a line/exchange-port problem all along.

    @essbebe
    i've already tried that, and tried once again after your suggestion, but the same problem. And i've tried connecting on WinXP, WinVista, Ubuntu, Fedora.

    @just4kix
    yes, i think you are right. The problem is with line i suppose. Just 10 minutes ago i tried my friend's 220bx modem with my BSNL; the same problem again.

    anyways, i called my local exchange today, and the guy said he would come to my house today to check the problem. lets see if he has a solution.

    its really sad to face such problems even before my connection started. its close to 2 months now since i applied for the new connection.

    Then it is definitely line/port problem.

    yes, you are right. that same bsnl guy called me up just a few minutes ago and said there may be a fault in the exchange. he has asked me to remind him tomorrow and he would fix the problem.

    You never confirmed whether the BSNL phone connection is working !
    If it is working ( noise free )with/without ADSL splitter BB connection
    problem can be at Exchange end/ or at your end.
    Ask them to connect/test with your UserID and Password and confirm.
    As a new connection the exchange has to activate it.
    You have also reported attn of 50db, which is quite high.
    the value for attenuation is about 50dB, and SNR value is around 16dB (downstream). are these values in the permitted range
    still should get connected Even an intermittent connection.
    How far away, you are from the exchange ?

    i have confirmed from the exchange, the connection is active.
    and the exchange is not far from my house, just about 200 metres away

    i think the problem is clear now, its a fault in exchange. i'll see what happens tomorrow and let you know.

    anyways, thanks everyone for trying to help me

    just wanted to let you know, the problem is fixed. got my dataone broadband working with 220bx just 5 minutes back. the bsnl guy said it was a problem with some line in the exchange.

    but still the attenuation value is 50db. and the browsing speed is around 1.2Mbps. i expected it to be atleast 1.7-1.8Mbps

    anyways, i'm happy to get my connection working.....atlast!! :14:

    Good that the problem is sorted out partially. Line attenuation is high. But what about SNR margin?

    If the problem persists make another report.

    SNR Margin (dB) is
    16.8(downstream)
    13.5(upstream)
    are the values fine?

    These (SNR Margins) are fine. Remember that BSNL does not promise 2 mbps. They say that anything from 256 kbps up to 2 mbps. So just because you are getting 1.1 mbps, you do not have a basis for complaint. Also 2 mbps is a speed that is promised between your router and BSNL's DSLAM.

    If you check on BSNL Speed Checker site, you will get ridiculous speeds. But BSNL will claim that they are accurate.

    Extremely frustrating, I know. But that's how it is.
