Will sure be a reality......may be in next 2~3 years to come....
I am sure in a couple of years time we will have 8mbps and faster connections with unlimited usage at very affordable prices
The situation you see here in India is exactly how broadband took off everywhere in the world minus the bad service and downtime we have here...
In th begining say 2000-2001 in UK a 512kbps unlimited connection used to coz 50 pounds a month which is about Rs4500 and now you get a 24mbps unlimited connection there for less then Rs1500
Absolutely. In 2003-04, I was in UK (Woking, Surrey) and I had 512 kbps unlimited connection from BT Broadband and I used to pay £24.99 per month (~ Rs. 2000). Now the speeds have jumped to 6 mbps and above.
Comcast, the leading cable broadband provider in USA, provides the following plans (all unlimited usage):
a) 6 mbps for $19.99 pm + tax for first six months, $32.99 pm + tax later
b) 12 mbps for $42.99 pm +tax
c) 16 mbps for $52.99 pm + tax
BSNL was giving 256 kbps for Rs. 900 + tax pm till 31-Mar-2008. The same plan is now costing Rs. 750 + tax pm.
My guess is that we should see another price cut next year or bandwidth increase. Right now there is a lot of infrstructure and leasing cost. Once the cost is recovered we should see the usage limits lifted and higher speeds available. Give another 3 years.

It would be great if the government of India gave all ISP's a tax break of 5 years. Our government needs to understand that this internet is no luxary ... its a need and everyone should have access to it like land line phone, mobile phones and television.
For those who dont know ... UK has more internet connections then IndiaIf you take into consideration the total populations of these two countries... its a massive gap in internet penetration.
Well, it better be sooner., The connections, is what I meant about!
I really doubt so. Cause according to a recent survey, the number of broadband connections in India, as of now is only 1.3 connections/100 people. And according to the analyst's prediction, with this rate, there maybe only 3.24 connections/100 people in 2012.
But I really hope so that we get 8 Mbps connection as soon as possible. I was shockedto hear that people abroad are getting such high speeds and I used to think 512 kbps was as fast of lightning:closedeyes:
in sweden people in some places have 2gbps home connections(that's right!gbps not even mbps).in japan & korea 100mbps connections are now available at various places for home users. But I really hope so that we get 8 Mbps connection as soon as possible. I was shocked to hear that people abroad are getting such high speeds and I used to think 512 kbps was as fast of lightning
yes and when the whole world moves from gbps to tbps....we will advance from kbps to mbps....and when and if a time comes (some 50yrs) here we move to gbps probably the world moves to some new technology and we still keep whining about our gbps connection.....give it up guys our country no matter how much it progresses will still lag behind other countries and we never stop comparing our isp's with other ips's of the world.....a never ending story :stuart:
Absolutely incorrect. We leapfrogged in mobile phones. The mobile market in India is growing much more rapidly that any place in the world. The same can happen with Broadband also.
The problem is PC penetration. Any person can use a phone but not everyone is computer savvy. It is a demand and supply situation. When demand increases, supply also increases (in an open economy). New players jump into the void that exists. When there is a lot of users the overall cost comes down and that plus competition drives the prices southward.
I do not understand why you choose to take a defeatist and negative outlook of the country. Things change but change does not happen overnight.
yes man i agree with u on some points ....but things do change here not may be over night but not as fast as other countries would....its just the mobile market that has brought the revolutionary change but nothing else has changed. just by this we cant presume that other field of life would quickly develop like the "mobile world"...u cant expect india to override countries like china and japan. heck even a poor country like philliphines has a broadband unlimited offer of 5mbps.....remember...even after 60 years of independence...india is a "still developing country" and god knows when that tag will be gone

Well Said Kixy.....................
so prashant u dont agree with me? or anyone else for that matter?...in this compitative world u need to have changes "overnight" in order to "compete"....my point is not about the pace of development in india within its spheres..but comparison with other countries...and the results of comparison would make our country a laughing stock of the whole world
You guys keep watching... give it another 5 years and you are in for a surprise.
The main culprit is our unplanned cities and this issue is slowly been looked after by new plans and the loads of SEZ's that are comming up and a lot of townships.. The unplanned areas in cities will also slowly get transformed.
I have seen people in villages at Punjab getting bsnl broadband connections and I know some one who got the connection and doesnt know a word of english... The only site he goes to is Ludhiana agricultural uni website to get info about crops, pesticides and fertilizers and all that stuff... There are so many other fields people are making use of the net now.
In India there are so many places people are waiting for an ISP to come around and provide broadband and wimax will hopefully do the trick and help a lot in more net penetration.
The next 10 years will change the face of our nation is what I believe and poverty will go away for goodJobs for every one and law and order in every corner of our nation
I hope you would all then be able to hold your heads high and say that you are proud to be an Indian![]()
Boneless even if u knw the reality dont say it aloud keep your country high buddy & you should have a hope on Hindhustan Dost.
Hindhustan aaj nahi toh Kal Jeetega...
Well, Its will be a great thing IF it happens. I guess we all can do nothing but hope that it happens.
I think the future for broadband is very bright. Things will change for the good and we will get high speeds in the near future. Today 8 mbps is costing around Rs. 2000. Tomorrow it will cost very less and will be well within the reach of the common man :14:. Till then ROCK ON BSNL.
We dont have much competition here in india, BSNL is acting like an elephant because it knows that many people have no other choice but them. Let me give you an example, i live in belgaum, few years back i got a net connection from bsnl, service was ****, as usual, took like 3 weeks for connection to reach my house, had huge problems with downtime in rainy season. This was not my story only almost all my friends had issues. Then came airtel, offered apply today, get connection today. Quality was much better!! hardly any downtimes(1 night in whole year!) Download rates were awesome. BSNL LOST a lot of people to airtel. BSNL did learn thier lesson, now service is a bit better, connections are done in a matter of days now, response from lines men or complaints are much faster. But the downtimes still proceed.
All i am saying we as internet consumers lack choice what these other companies should do is rent bsnl lines, I mean strike a deal with bsnl were you pay a rent for their lines. If bsnl dont agree i feel a company may be able to drag bsnl to court over this. I mean this is what companies in autralia used to do, they knew telstra there had all the cabling. So lease telstra lines and provide your own network on that.
I think there are a year or two left for having a free download during night time. I doesn't think it is possible in this situation.
