    Question

However, i feel that going for a 18KB/S connection is not advisable if you want video chats, software downloads and online games!!
So basically tell us that what's the purpose for buying a data card??

Default 144 kbps is narrowband !

144 kbps = 18KB/s is too too slow. And thats the maximum you could get.
The actual speeds will be less than that. Which depends on the distance from the tower. Around 8-12KB/s (64-100kbps). It will take a long time to load a page. And dont even think of downloading (70MB will take 2.5 hrs at 100 kbps ) Using BSNL EVDO in non-evdo enabled areas is not the best option.

today i have applied for bsnl evdo with 144 kbps,
and the main purpose is to browse the net like mail,
forum, social net, reading news, virus update and yea some downloading of software.
But after some month I m thinking to apply broadband to download movies, games, etc.
As of now I m presently staying in temporary house which i m planning to shift to another one.Thats the main reason.
The Bsnl guy told me to come after one week to collect the set,
Until then .. wish me luck

p.s. (at present I m browsing the net thru airtel gprs) ha ha...

That wasn't a good decision, you will regret the decision of going to 144kbps,Dude it's very much slow,
You said that you are appyling for broadband connection, currently you are on airtel gprs, then what's the need of such a slow 18KB/S connection,

And ya Social Media Orkut etc.,you will face difficulties in them and about the software downloads, even a single software of 100MB would consume around 100~150Minutes!

Default Nothing to regret if it is on rental!

    Hi crysis,

You have paid only 1276. So, I guess, you have taken PCMCIA card on monthly rental basis and not outright purchase. i.e Deposit of Rs.1000 + x x x.

Then, you are not going to have much loss, unless you have purchased the card for Rs.2800. Some consolation.

    Hi Kadamba,

The price of the PCMCIA card is Rs. 2000 ( revised )

Older type laptop will support PCMCIA and recent ones support Express cards. But, I don't know which one they are supplying now. Only crysis has to confirm. The following link to the BSNL site states only about PCMCIA card. Very old one needs update ( 2007 ) link....

BSNL Data Card - High Speed Internet - Anywhere

You have asked about ' card that supports laptop too in BSNL evdo '....I think you are asking about Express card type internal one. If yes means, Express cards are PCI express and USB 2.0 compatible high speed NIC. source link.....

    ExpressCard Question and Answers

Hence those with Express card slot will definitely have USB 2.0 port which can be used for EVDO data cards, rather than searching for express card. BSNL supplies Capitel make 3G internal cards ( Rs.4000 and Rs.4500 )....the link....

    :: BSNL 3G ::

However the express slot in the laptop has other utilities like TV tuner cards etc.

Nothing mentioned about EVDO internal card.

    Default Sorry for the delay

dont know abut the other areas, but I enquire from bsnl man ... he told me they are dealing with nic cards.
and regarding the performance its somewhat equals to gprs

its of no use....at least gprs is constant, evdo disconnect repeatedly every 20-30 seconds, better opt for broadband.
