    Unhappy Direct Downloads

    Hi,

I purchased my BSNL EVDO card today. I am not getting direct download speeds beyond 40-50 KBps.I live in Agra, U.P. I am getting 4 bar signal. And it is also connecting in the EVDO mode. I tried using various download accelerators such as IDM and DAP but still no help. I am using Windows 7 and connecting using ZTE wireless application. Drivers are updated. EVDO is available in my area and i checked my plan it is 750 unlimited 3.2 Mbps. Please guide me on the issue...!

    Thanks!

Download any file from Microsoft and report the speed here. File sharing sites like Rapidshare , Megaupload etc gives lower speed as mentioned by you to its users. You need a premium account to get higher speeds from these hosting sites.

I downloaded dotnetfx 2.2 of size 22.42 mb directly from microsoft and my speeds touched as low as 11 kBps to as high as 55 kBps. stablised around 40 kBps. Also i tried downloading from websites like softpedia.com and google labs but cannot get more than 40 kBps.

yea well thats true that they have no tech knowledge about , n it feels bad as dis connection did not come in cheap! .i m myself experiencing the same problems as i just got it recently and gues already considering it as a biggest mistake bt on a slightly brighter side, i have heard airtel should b coming with their 3G by this deewali, so i say, if u still experience same problems, then just wait for it, and you already got a 3G modem and i m very sure it isnt 3g modem fault, so just get the airtel 3g sim and use it ll be still cheaper, its sad, because trust me a technology like 3g can actualy never have speeds below 500 kbps actually the 3g i have used outside india it did not have speeds below 1.5mbps and this was their standard speed on prepaid there wer speeds upto 7.2 and stable. the technology is very strong, this tower distance and stuff really shouldnt matter unless how much committment is from the ISP, 3g signals are somethng like radio waves from which we listen radio, it can almost come everywhere if properly configure and put up in right places, at this point 3g has just come for the heck of it, once private sectors gets in the market and its gonna be sooner, that 'll be the best time, and seriously i ll recommend u to wait for airtel 3g sim, because in my past i have never experience any problems with airtel service those people have the right people in right jobs and very aware of the importance n impact of of their services! i m too hopin it comes down by this month. meanwhile just do one thing, buy an extended usb cable and connect ur 3g modem to ur comp to it n if u have a window just put it somewhere on the window and try!for some reason the signal is not strong enough specially if u on the lower floor, this is mainly due to not proper config of towers!

thnx for the reply. I guess there is no option except to wait. i hav already tried the cable extension to the window solution! again didn't work! I liv on d 5th floor nd I guess there should be no probs in recieving s signal... let's hope private companies provide 3g the way it should be... seamless fast internet!

the problem is that u are getting 4 bars out of 5 it drastically reduces ur signal strength, its similar to a mobile signal strength, if u have lesser number of bars the chances to get call drops and voice clarity will be a problem.

If u are using a laptop try to change ur room or try using it elsewhere, where u can get 5 bars speed will be much better and it will never be 3.1 Mbps ( and not 3.2 mbps ). this will be cos u are not using a dedicated phone line for connection. Hence it is mentioned that u get speeds upto 3.1 mbps and not exactly 3.1 mbps.

Also the speed u are getting is 55 KBps ( or kilobytes per second ) which means its 55x8 = 440 kbps ( kilo bits per second ). If u get 5 bars like me u will be able to get 1.5 MBps to 2.5 Mbps ( mega bits per second and not bytes ) which i get usually. and for 750 unlimited that is the best plan u can get at the moment!

Also, if u don't find 5 bars anywhere in nearby locality, u should write an application and submit it to ur area's commercial officer. since the BSNL problem reporting is becoming centralized these days there is a chance it will be looked into very soon.

With all its limited technical support, one good thing about BSNL is, once its up and running, there will not be any problems. And there will no draconian Cheating "fair usage policy " of the likes of Airtel, etc. That is the USP of BSNL for me.
