This question fascinates a lot of people whether your BSNL EVDO USB dongle can be used with a Wifi Router so that you can connect multiple PCs, Laptops, Smartphones at a time? The answer is YES. You can use your EVDO USB dongle with a Wifi router. Not all routers support it, but yes there are a few who will get your work done. I have compiled the list of a few such router along with a tutorial. Here are they:-

EVDO is like 3G for mobiles. You can use EVDO the same way you use 3G on your PC.

it would work only if your EVDO RUIM is OMH compatible i.e. has a "diamond" mark on it.

in case of CDMA some of the required network settings are normally stored in the device. so only device that are already having the settings of relevant operator works with that operator.
but now gradually Qualcom is promoting setting on RUIM technology with OMH (Open Market Handset) system. But for that to work two things are required
    1. OMH Handset
    2. OMH compatible RUIM.

OMH RUIM is denoted by a special "diamond" symbol printed on it.

There is a modem on flipkart TP LInk MR3020 .with this router almost all modem work.I tested zte evdo and prithvi modem and both work fine.To configure them in settings of router just leave the apn field blank and rest the same. The only concern with this router is its small cable for charging but that can be extended by the evdo cable itself.

    Hi

Are you certain that it works with prithvi UE100 modem? I am having currently MR3220 from TPlink and it works well with all other brands usb modems except this rare prithvi one. It gets recognize in the firmware(web based utility) but doesn't connects. The only drawback MR3020 has is that its single WAN/LAN port Otherwise i could have think of buying it. Do u think i should go for MR3020 over my current MR3220? Maybe future firmware updates make prithvi modem compatible with MR3220.

yes i use it everyday with my laptop and android phone.BTW i am using MR3020 and not MR3220.I dont have any idea about MR3220 but with MR3020 both the evdo modems old ZTE and new Prithvi are working i have tested both of them and they work fine.

OK thanks, I will see if i can buy it, rest of the things are good of evdo except its speed. Speeds are actually great when i download from the rooftop, i can achieve up to 2 mbps but in my room i get only 300 Kbps. Do u have any solution for this? I checked the speed with my laptop. Also this one crazy thing i have never experienced in any other operators, that 2 mbps speed is very hard to get even on my rooftop, you see i only get 2 mbps when i put my laptop in particular position and on particular place. Its like signals are too sensitive. Do u have any solution for this any cable antenna or something?

This is a hit and trial method that i used and got speed. There is a place in my room where i usually get speeds ranging from 1.5-2 Mbps .Also taking out the sim cap of the modem and placing it inverted helps me to get better speeds .And if u want u can try putting any aluminium metal connected to the modem it helps in getting better signals. As far as for the router there is a concern that it has very short range maybe a couple of rooms only. When i go to roof i loose my wifi signal which is just one story up.

    Hi

You are not going to believe, my prithvi modem actually worked with mr3220 tonight, it was fully connecting, the status bar showing the signal bar full. i have no idea how it worked this time, i used *777 as dial no. instead of #777. maybe or not it was the issue. Rest i don't know, its a miracle to me. Firmware update really works, it wasn't even detecting this prithvi before, still it was not connecting even after firmware upgrade, somehow tonight its connected as well. It could be dial no? i don't understand this.

Thanks, one last thing, Is this ok to use *777 instead of #777 as a dial no. ? My router works flawlessly when i use *777, things are quite smooth with *777. One more thing if i use #777 then connection keep disconnecting in 1 - 2 hour (it simply reconnects) but it stays stable with *777 (doesn't disconnects).

Different devices have different dialling numbers. For eg in gsm dongles some of the dongles use *99***1# and some use *99# but that does not affect their bill or usage .So u can carry on using this *777 , for me *777# works.

    hi frendz.

i have bsnl prithvi ue100 evdo device. in my area i usually get around 80-100 KB/S speed. Today i have purchased new tp link 3040 3g/3.75G router which support evdo devices. and i think i wasted my money on it. first it was not getting connecting i tried all the dial up number [*777,#777,*777#] in the router setup page then i upgraded the firmware from tplink site. now instead of 3G/3.75G it is showing 3G/4G and now device is connecting by using the *777# dial up number. but now the problem is that the speed is damn slow its 1-2KB/S maximum it goes to 25KB/S. what could be the problem guyz? Please someone reply asap.

    Hello
I have been using BSNL evdo since almost a year now, (using micromax modem) and from my experience, its speed is only good if i keep the usb modem moving it. For example, if i put the modem near window, speed goes to 900 Kbps max, and even if i move it just a cm its speed drops dramatically to 150kbps or less, so i am getting 900kbps only on that spot. I think in your case, you need to align your usb modem on the best spot where ur using it. You also need to buy an usb extension cable, and make sure its not longer then 30 cm, otherwise it won't work. This prithvi modem is special or just some cheap quality product, it looses its signals when connecting through usb cable longer than 30cm, I got micromax one instead, it works with usb cable as long as 5m, so 30cm vs 5m. Also there is too much headache in using evdo, i have to keep modem moving it to maintain its speed and the most troublesome part is finding the right spot where i can get max speed. I used to use my MR3220 with prithvi, it used to work pretty well after the firmware upgrade, but my micromax one is not compatible with router.

So for your problem, just buy usb cable and put the modem at the same place where u were getting 80-100KB/S speed.
    Good Luck

    @smarty84

As Rahul mentioned in the above post it is all about placing the modem at the right spot. Now that you have the router I assume you connect using wifi so how about placing it on the window sil? or in the balcony if you have one or similar spots where signal strength would improve.

    Hello Admin and Rahul,

I still did not found my answer, does BSNL Prithvi works well with TP-link MR3040. Can you please suggest.
I also have alternate option D-Link DWR-131 3G Pocket Router

Both have battery backup but +1 to MR3040 for micro USB power input. I can use the device with my car charger.

    Please suggest.

I have not used Bsnl Prithvi with either of them so cannot comment. I found this post : http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-e...tml#post375011

I also do not believe that the battery option in these router makes much sense unless your usage only involves something like half an hour to one hour. I use the net for long hours so battery doesnt make sense for me dont know about you.

Prithvi doesnt seem to work with MR3020 so not sure if it would work with MR3040 either.

    Hello

Well i don't think it will work with MR 3040 as i noticed that prithvi modem is not in the compatibility list of this router in official website, see here 3G/4G USB Modem Compatibility List for TL-MR3040 - Welcome to TP-LINK, I have MR 3220 V1 and my prithvi works good with it, i had to upgrade its firmware to make it work, Also its in the official compatibility list now as well 3G/4G USB Modem Compatibility List for TL-MR3220 - Welcome to TP-LINK. I am not sure about this D-Link DWR-131 3G router for its compatibility with prithvi modem, just because this usb modem is very unique type. You may want to take a look at this TL-MR3020 - Welcome to TP-LINK, its also compatible with prithvi.
Yeah i almost forgot, you can contact TP-link customer support, they might give you a custom firmware to make your prithvi work with mr3040. I also had ZTE ac8700 and it wasn't working with my mr3220 then i contacted support and they gave me custom firmware and then it started working. Contact form E-mail Support - Welcome to TP-LINK, they usually replies in 12 hours.
    Good luck

Thanks you very much Admin and Rahul. Your valuable inputs really matters.

I tested BSNL prithvi with D-Link DWR-131 3G Pocket Router (my friend have this device), and it works well but I didn't tested with MR3040.

As admin suggest, battery backup does not make any much impact, I agree with you. I don't live much time without electricity and not travel so much. I think I should go for D-Link DWR-131 3G Pocket Router as this is already tested with my BSNL prithvi.

    thank you once again mate

    I have ordered a TP Links MR3020.
Their tech support team says it will support BSNL PRITHVI UE100 with an firmware update.
I will update once i confirm it working.
