Lightbulb Need your inputs on BSNL EVDO prepaid

    Hi All

I'm planning to take BSNL EVDO PREPAID.I'm staying in taramani,Chennai.IVR & CC people are saying different things about UL750

    1. UL750 = Rs750 or 750 +service tax?
    2. Rs 399 activation charges as told by cc person ...Any one who got this datacard recently paid this amount??
    3. device cost =1199 ...No FUP & reduction in speed
    4. min.Speed =2.4 -3.2 Mbps as told by CC team
    5. Which modem provided by BSNL will be good (mention along with speeds they support)
    6. Can I use any other modems apart that is given by BSNL .I will use on Win7 64bit OS & win XP 32bit (mention along with speeds they support)
    7. How can the validity of the card can be extended ?
8 . As per IVR, if we do Rs20 top-up validity extends by 180 days..Untill there is validity, we can recharge depending on our usage.
    9. How can we check balance online?
10.How can we recharge online for exactly Rs750?
    11. Any webistes/torrents currently blocked?
12.How is CC support..Are they prompt in resolving the issues?

Chennai guys: I asked for demo & cc said that they don't have any sales agent/team number Instead they gave me some telephone exchange numbers where no one picks up the call.Any one staying near to tidel park or velacheri..plz let me know how download speeds are & from where you have taken modem? I'm outstation candidate. Will they accept company's ID card as address proof...How you guys overcame this? It will be great if any one has contact number of sales agent in chennai.

As per micromax website there are 3 modems at present.Which one will support BSNL EVDO ??

CC guy told max.speed supported by device will be 7.1 Mbps.No device details have been given!!!

sarveshmotihari: Need your inputs too considering OS,which modem to select, recharge options (online only)

Here are the answers to your questions:-

    1. For prepaid:- UL 750 ONLY
    For postpaid:- UL750+ Tax= 825

    2. If you buy the modem from BSNL itself, there will be no activation charges. If you buy modem from the market, 399 activation charges will be applicable.

    3. Absolutely NO FUP at all...

    4. No guarantee of minimum speed as speed depends on a lot of factors..

    5. BSNL provides Prithvi UE 100 model which supports speeds upto 3.1 mbps(Which is the max EVDO can provide)

    6. Yes you can use modems apart from those provided by BSNL such as MMX 310C. All the modems will work fine in Windows XP or Windows 7 32 bit. Modems create a lot of driver issues in Windows 7 64 bit.

    7. The validity of card is extended by making recharge of either 110 or 220.

    8. IVR has outdated info. New info:-

    110 recharge- 6 months validity
    220 recharge - 12 months validity

    9. You can't check balance online.

    10. You can topup online from paytm website. Do a topup(not recharge of 750).

    11. None of the website/torrents are currently blocked.

    12. CC support is as usual the worst..

    13. All the CDMA based modems will support EVDO.

EVDO supports maximum speeds of 3.1 mbps. CC guys are useless its not 7.1 mbps/

Which modem is best? Prithvi UE 100 or MMX 310C. What documents need to be submitted for address proof?

I would suggest going with Prithvi UE100 modem as it is cheap and supports speeds upto 3.1 mbps

I have no idea about the documents. Sorry about that.

I dont think BSNL will provide MMX 310C @ the mentioned price which is Rs 1190 since the market price of the MMX 310C is around Rs 2000. For address proof you need to submit the latest BSNL landline bill or electricity bill or voter ID or driving license.

One more thing that i would like to add to what Mr. Sarvesh said is that the UE100 is not supported when used with USB extension cables of length more than 3mtrs. I say this because you may not know the signal strength inside your premise and you may then need to get hold of an extension cable. MMX 310C supports 10mtrs long USB extension cable (i use it)

No. With your driving license you can get the EVDO from AP and use it anywhere in India as roaming is free for BSNL EVDO.

    @dushie

    how is the download speed?

    @Sarvesh

    I have some doubts.

1.Is signal strength directly related to download speed?

    2. What will be the initial validity of RUIM if I take UL750 plan.I'm asking about connection validity?

    3. Suppose I use for 1month,then not used for 2months,again start using on 4th month, what happens to the balance if remaining balance at end of 1st month is around Rs 50.Will it go to negative?

    4. BSNL guy told I have recharge with Rs 800 not with 750 since I have to maintain min.balance of Rs 50 at any time.Is it true??

    5. Can you tell me how to recharge in paytm step by step.

    6. For problems such as device not working, less download speeds etc whom we have to contact. Is there any technical assistance for this (I need more technical people not cc people who says blah blah)

    @krish_indian :
Speeds are not that great hovering around 512 Kbps.

There are lot of factors which affect the speed you get : -

1.Signal Strength - How much you are getting
    2. Modem - How good the modem you are using is
    3. Location - Are you near the tower, line of sight
    4. No of users - How many users in that area have EVDO connections and are using the services

512kbps...Is it connection speed or download speed alone??
As per logic, max download speed we get in 3.1mbps connection is 350-370KBps.
I'm expecting atleast 220+ KBps speed in my location.I will surely ask for demo & then only take the connection.

Let me know which modem you are using & how much distance you are from the tower?

@krish_indian speed is around 0.5mbps... i was expecting atleast 2mpbs... in the morning i m getting around 1 to 1.5 mbps... speed fluctuates a lot... ther r two towers near my house around 2 to 3 km apart... so before u buy it take a demo n check the speed

    1. Yes speed is directly related and also proportional to the signal strength.
    2. The initial validity of the RUIM is one week.
    3. The balance will be as is. If it was 50 2 months back, it will be 50 even now. No deduction from the balance.
    4. No need to maintain min. balance of 50. That BSNL person has not enough knowledge.
    5. Just go to Paytm. Select BSNL. Now enter RUIM number and select TOPUP. Enter the amount as 750 and pay. That's it.
    6. No. If you are opting BSNL, forget any Technical assistance. In the mean time, you can post here at IBF and we will try to help you out.

i have one small (silly) doubt
What will be the approx.time taken to download a 10MB file if my connection speed is 500kbps/500KBps/2Mbps/2MBps ??
I'm very much confused about kbps & KBps speeds.

If I get 500kbps as download speed,is it a good speed?

Lower case b is a bit.
Upper case B is a Byte.

There are 8 bits in a Byte.

Bits are used to measure true speed of how many 1's and 0's are going through a connection.

Bytes are used to measure the size of a file.

The speed always gets jacked up because we should be measuring in bits, but MS always measures in Bytes per Second.

    Try going to:

Speedtest.net - The Global Broadband Speed Test

    or

Speed Test | Bandwidth | Broadband Internet Services

to show what speed you are really getting. Test it on sites that are further away and you will start to see your speed fall as you hit congestion somewhere!

Test it against a server that is close to you and one that is far away and you will see that Download Speed depends on SOOO many things.

    1) The speed of your connection to the Internet is one of the main factors. The faster you are, the better your chances of getting the "speed" your desiring.

    2) The distance between you and the distant end your surfing. THe longer the distances, the bigger the chance that you will hit congestion. If any router between you and the server your making request from is busy, your speed halts BIG TIME! Also, what time of day is it? Early in the morning on the east coast will usually have better surfing than later when the west coast wakes up!

    3) The type of traffic. TCP traffic requires a response for EACH and every packet. UDP (sound / video) doesnt care. However, if the quality is low, you will see/hear it on your end (lagging, buffering).

    4) The speed of the distant end connection to the Internet. Usually this is quite large since they sometimes have a server farm of services (not just one site).

    5) The final factor is how busy the site is that your making a request from. If 1000's of people are going to it, and they only have one web server, your going to once again see your speed be diminished!

Around 15 seconds !!! I get a speed of around 1.5 Mbps in which 700 MB data is downloaded in an Hour i.e. 1MB in 5 seconds.

this is how you calculated right?
    500kbps = 500/8 =62.5KBps
    1MB=1024KB
    1024/62.5 =16.8 sec

    Now I have doubt.EVDO speed is 3.1Mbps then 3100/8=387Kbps
    387/8=48.37KBPs
then is it max.speed I get while using EVDO is 48.3KBps only??

Dude i understand your confusion now, hope the following would clear that.

    1) 921.6kbps is the maximum speed that is supported by the modem you are using.

    2) You are presently getting 101.50 kbps speed of the 921.6kbps

    3) At 101.50 kbps connection speed(BANDWIDTH) the maximum download speed that you'l get or are getting is 12.68 kB/sec, its correct.

BSNL people are irritating me from last week. They are willing to give device instantly but not interested to give demo before payment.I am following with one number they gave but that guy postpones demo every day.Looks like only 1 guy is there is to give demo for entire chennai!!
MTS & TATA people are ready to give demo & activation within 2 hrs.Wonder when BSNL will reach that stage.

this is absolute irresponsible behavior by bsnl. Now that guy cuts the call.I visited 4 times CSC,made 20 calls, wasted 5HRS in this week for this. Why the hell they are thinking that customer will take EVDO without demo? If providing demo itself a problem,I don't know when they will resolve if any issue arises.Any of you guys faced these issues? I don't know whom to escalate!

No. It's not like that. If you take 750 plan the plan will auto-renew itself after the end of the month if the balance in you RUIM is more than 750. It wont renew itself if the balance is less than 750 like if you have 10 Rs as balance it won't become -740. But if you have 800 balance it will deduct 750 and will leave 50 as balance.

You can leave it for as many months you want..the balance will not go to negative. You only need to make a validity recharge to keep the RUIM sim activated...

    Hope this clarifies.
