The graphic cards sold today are of two types:

AGP: This is the slightly old technology and is on its way out. Most PCs built and purchased before 2006 will have AGP slot and hence can use AGP cards only.

PCI-E or PCI-Express: This is newer technology and all new motherboards sold today will have PCI-E slot. You must purchase PCI-E graphics card in this case.

If you are not a techie yourself, have your system checked from a technician.

If you are an avid gamer, then you should have a graphics card that has at least 256 MB memory. nVidia is the most popular Graphic Processing Unit; ATI is the other brand.

You can also detect your graphics card this way:

    1. Right Click on "My Computer" icon.
    2. Click on Properties. The "System Properties" window will appear.
    3. On the "System Properties", click on "Hardware" tab.
    4. Click on the "Device Manager" button. A new window called "Device Manager" will appear.
    5. A lot of your hardware devices will be listed. Click on the '+' sign that appears against the name called "Display Adapters"
    6. You will find the name of your display adapter.

Post your display adapter name here so that I can advise further.

This means that you have an ob-board graphics card, i.e., your motherboard has a built-in graphics card. Such on-board graphic cards are fine for normal use but definitely not meant for gaming.

You have not indicated how old your system is? If it is more than 1 year old, it is most likely that your motherboard supports AGP (older technology). Or if you know the manufacturer and the model number of your motherboard, a graphics cards can be suggested.

You can buy an AGP graphics card from leading manufacturers such as nVidia, ATI, etc. For serious gaming you need at least 256 mb graphics memory and it should support many advanced features like DirectDraw, PixelShading, etc.

Do not buy an expensive AGP graphics card if you are planning to upgrade your system soon. AGP will be eventually replaced by PCI-E very soon.
