Default Issue with connectivity with Cable internet

    Hello guys,
I recently got myself a cable internet plan from BBNL who directly provide me a CAT6 cable (I don't need a modem). Now, for some strange reason, I'm able to access it quite well directly, but not via a router. Does anyone have any idea as to why it might be so? I thought cable length might be an issue and hence got optical fibering done but even then, the problem persists.

I need to go via the router since I have a wifi requirement at home (I don't want to use my PC to act as a wireless point). Anyone has faced this problem before?

    Thanks,
    Vyasa.

    Thanks for your prompt response.

BBNL is a Bangalore based cable internet provider: Google it to get it. bbnl[dot]co[dot]in.

I have a belkin sharemax N600. I've set the passwords for the wifi and shared the connection to a couple of PCs as well. However, the connection is intermittent as opposed to when I plug in the network cable that I got from the ISP, I get very good speeds (when I dial in via them using a username and password).

My ISP guy and me have been breaking our heads as to why it is not working via the router. We've changed wiring, switches. I don't think it is a firewall issue as well.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find a solution in google, so I turned to this!

Try Connectify for the moment. You may need a WiFi adapter on the PC and Windows 7 Home Premium or higher. It will make your PC a hot spot to which you can connect other laptops.

Wait for further comments from someone using your ISP / modem or try to contact the customer care if possible.

Thank you. I had thought of that as you had replied to one of my queries long time back with the connectify solution at Windows 7.

I have kept it as a back up. My ISP guy and me have spent around 5-6 hours looking at it but still could not figure out what we were doing wrong.

Besides, I need the router. I bought a Belkin 600 as I wanted only it to be on while I'm downloading stuff from torrents into a networked drive via USB.. It has one of Vuze clients bundled with it so that I can switch off the PC once I start downloading.

Thank you all for your inputs. A firmware update and a change of switch from the ISP's side meant that I have the plan up and working.

1k (all inclusive)/ month for 5Mbps unlimited (all through) in Bangalore. No limits.

I'm happy with that since I got what I was promised. On an average I clock 3-4 Mbps.

Hi Vyasa, I'm planning on getting a BBNL connection myself. Could you please tell me what your latency to servers in the US are? Also where in Bangalore do you live?

(To check latency, if you dont know, try speedtest[dot]net and select a server on the east/west coast and check latency )

Regarding latency to servers on USA east/west coast.......... what is the best you getting so far?
I regularly connect to usa .Not downloading .but connect to financial institutions for live data/transacting.
I have no wired ADSL/ Fiber internet .
so only mobile 3G (Airtel/Aircel/Voda/BSNL)or some time CDMA( Photon plus/Reliance Netconnect)
when a 3G connection is showing 3-5 mbps in speedtest.net to a server in Mumbai/chennai/newdelhi, local ping is between 85 to 130 ,
to USA is around 350 at best.
what is the ideal latency you expect to us servers out of India (with a consumer connection and not a office one)
