India's First Electric Car -- REVA


In the year 2001 India got its first electric battery operated car which was designed and developed keeping mother nature in mind, ofcours to reduce the pollution levels and to save the natural resources like oil.

The first one was Rave i.

It can travel for 80Km in one charge and can be charged any where, it can accommodate two people comfortably, it has got a life span of about 40,000Km, its simple to drive as they don't have clutch or gears. Priced at a range of 3.30 to 4.28 lakhs.

REVA NXR

This year they will start producing Reva NXR, which will be a four seater hatchback family car with a top speed of 104 kmp and can run 160 kms per charge. It has got an exciting feature Ravive (Remote Emergency charge) which will activate a reserve amount of energy so that you can continue further. It will be available in two variants NXR City and NXR Intercity. Expected to be priced at Rs. 16,00,000.

In 2011 they will start producing Reva NXG, which has got a stylish design, whic is also a 2 seater with removable Top, two charging modes. It has got a driving range of 200 kms it can reach a top speed of 130 kmp.Some luxury features it has got are rear camera, alloy wheels, dual SRS airbags, keyless entry.

Reva NXG looks promising if they price it right but if the price is going to be more then say 6 lakhs then I doubt there would be any takers apart from some rich people who want to feel good about not burning petrol for their trips to the local shops or picking their kid up after school which is only 500 yards from their house.
I would love to buy one of these but with a very affordable price tag that would also make some economic sense.

Buying an electric car has a lot of problems:
1-In india,electricity is mostly generated by burning coal,so if you use an electric car you dont pollute by petrol but do cause pollution caused by excess burning of coal.

2-Electric cars dont have the reliability factor like petrol or diesel,If your battery gets discharged,it takes hours to completely charge it again

3-Electric cars in india are expensive,rather than spending 4lac on a two seater ppl buy a 4seater Astar with an average of 18kmpl for 3lacs

The best option to save money now and save the environment is to switch to CNG or LPG

The CNG kit costs about 35k and 60k for the hi-tech one(Involves injection of cng directly into the engine and there by not causing any harm to the car)

My dad's fiesta has a CNG kit (latter one)
Its average increased 1.5 times and mileage now comes out to rs 2/km(Svaing 4.5rs per km :O)

The first point can be fixed easily, just have some solar charging setup in your garage :)

also, did your dad get the CNG kit with the car or did he do it later ?
My fiesta gives a poor 7kmpl, just a little more than an year old...

Yeah but one square metre of a solar panel can generate 120watts max per hr only when clouds are not present and in the range of 11am-3pm
(You can only run a fan with that power)

Plus,solar panels are expensive
So solar is out

The best and eco friendly option is fuel cells(still in development-Maybe i can solve it when I become a chemical engineer :D)
in which They separate oxygen and hydrogen from water and burn hydrogen
(Zero pollution! :cool:)

My fiesta is 4 years old and my dad recently fitted a cng kit
I used to get an average of 9kmpl (petrol)

your average will improve over time
