Default The Best Cars that I have driven - Part 1: Dodge Intrepid

Over the years, I have travelled far and wide in India and abroad. Because of my frequent but mostly short term travels into various countries, I have had a chance to drive various cars either owned, rented out or borrowed from friends. Some of them were really nice while others were functional but boring while the third totally worthless. Now none of these are the Messaratti-class; all of them are what are known as "common man's class". In the series of articles, I am going to mention my experiences with a few of them. The list below includes some of my favourites (in that order):

    1. Dodge Intrepid
    2. Nissan Maxima
    3. Buick Century
    4. Honda Accord
    5. Toyota Camry
    6. Ford Crown Victoria
    7. my current Honda Civic
    8. Vauxhall Vectra

    1: Dodge Intrepid

In 2005, when I heard that the Dodge Intrepid had breathed it's last, I was really very sorry. I couldn't understand why such a fabulous car was off the production lines. Part of the reasons were of course related to the US Car industry woes and all that but that did not mean that the US had stopped manufacturing cars altogether. But there must have been other reasons that I, sitting in India, may not have understood. Whatever it was, sales had dwindled over the years and it was time to let go. Be it as it may, according to me, it was a fantastic car. I had a chance to drive it on rental basis for three months in 2001.

The first thing that struck me was what a large and roomy car the Intrepid was. It could easily seat five persons. So what is great about that? Even the Maruti D-Zire can carry five persons with ease. The difference is that the Intrepid could carry five persons, each 6' tall with a good 6" knee space. The trunk could easily fit 4 large suitcases. Having such a large car with ample room made you think that you are sitting in your lounge sofa. In fact, the danger was being too comfortable.

I drove this car not only in the town where I lived but took it on long drives to Chicago, Indiana, Kentucky, Iowa and Ohio. But here are some pictures:

No doubt about it. It was a looker.

The tail lamp cluster was unique, distinguishing and very elegant.

The interior and dashboard was good to very good and all controls were easily accessible.

Note that this is a car of late 90's early 2000. It may appear ordinary today but think 12 years ago and then imagine.

The car that I drove was a 2.7 litre V6 delivering 2000 hp. It was an automatic as most cars sold in America are.

The car had a very good pick up and easy feel. But what was outstanding about it was the sheer looks. It could make people turn around and look. To boot, I had a black colour model to drive and it used to gleam and shine. Being a rental car it was brand new - when I took it out, it had only some 800 odd miles on it. On the highways (I-65), it used to just fly and I used to wonder whether it was going to take off! Living in the mid-west, where population was rather thin meant that there were less cars on the road too. It had all the standard features such as on-steering audio controls, cruise control, LCD multi-display information (miles driven, trip meter, economy rate, etc.), leather seats, leather steering, heated seats, automatic remote start, etc.

It was fun to start the car using the remote. That was my first time and just for fun, I used to start the car from my first floor balcony looking at the car parked below. The advantage of this was really in the winter when one could start the car a good 10 minutes early and when you walk in, it was nice and warm.

Well what can one say about automatic transmission? I will just say that some cars give a distinct jerk and torque push when gears change. Some people like that feeling. Other cars are more gentle and you do not feel much jerk. The Intrepid used to give the feeling of jerk in just the right fashion and added to the fun and exhilaration.

If there was something that I did not like about the car was its braking distance - it was fairly long. It was good that I was driving on low crowded roads on the first day!

The Intrepid used to return an economy rate of 21 mpg in the city and about 28-29 mpg on the highways. This was fair for the car of its size but low by Japanese efficiency standards. I can't remember the exact petrol (or gas, as they call it in USA) price in those days but it was less than $2 per gallon (1 US gallon = 3.76 litres). I seem to remember that about $25 used to top up the tank (13 gallons).

    Part 2 here ...

Are you seriously kidding? Have you looked at the photos above? Does the i20 come anywhere close to it? The i20 is a nice functional car and that is all.

Here, I am talking about gourmet meals, if not five-course the French style then at least a three-course one. और आप कह रहे हो कि क्या आप दाल-खिचड़ी खाना पसंद करेंगे (And you are asking me whether I would like to eat Daal-Khichadi)?

I admit that I would like to eat Daal-Khichadi once in a while but no way can it compare to a Tandoori Chicken.

Nice thread. I like SUVs more than the sedans. Tata Sumo used to be my fav back in the school days. I've driven Toyota Fortuner and loved it.

I have driven Nissan Pathfinder and no other SUV. It was quite good but I did not like the roll an SUV has.

    जनाब, मेरा पेट ठीक है और जहाँ तक मेरा ख्याल है, करीब दो साल से बिगड़ा नहीं है.
