    Default Renault Duster

India, as an automobile market, is becoming increasingly more receptive to the idea of SUVs. Suddenly, cursing the developed country purchasers for running gas guzzlers is not in fashion any more. What is in vogue is the idea of buying a compact SUV running ideally on diesel. A premium road presence, without bursting through the pockets Ė now that surely is a smart choice. Naturally, smart India likes Renaultís Duster.

A lot has been written and said about the Duster, even before the car made it to the roads, where most battles are won and lost. The expectations were that aggressive pricing would catapult Renault into the top spot fighters of Indian auto industry and would grant a fitting option to the demanding Indian who would love to drive a bold vehicle without being immune to the costs of the same. Here, I try to find out if that has been the case. Naturally, each car launch is accompanied with such expectations and hype. So why does Renaultís Duster deserve a special investigation? The reason Ė Indians are becoming more expressive, and riding a compact SUV is a part of this contemporary Indianís personality, hence, the perfect time to scrutinize the performance of every CSUV.

    Exterior design
For some, the exterior personality of the SUV is half the weight. One has got to comment that Duster manages to qualify in the SUV segment more because of its intelligent designing than in-your-face brawn, as with several other SUVs. For instance, the 4.315 m mark, this vehicle is just above the line in terms of the fact that 4 m is the limit for a tag of a small car. However, the ground clearance gives this car the desired lift to make it appear as an impressive SUV. If you prefer numbers, let it be known that the ground clearance is 205 mm. In addition to this, the roof rails and running boards on both sides with the huge bonnet add more muscle to Duster. Thereís more aggressiveness in design than the size element. A fat 3-slat grille design lends a lot of oomph to the Duster, and so does the bonnet grille. This vehicle retains a lot from the base of Logan, but still manages to qualify as a step ahead from that car.

Intelligence oozes out of the rest of the design as well. The roof tapers slowly, and hence lets the vehicle have sufficient height at the rear side. The wheels are spaced as much as they could be, thus making the Duster a very spacious and stocky vehicle. Then, thereís sufficient boot space of 475 litres, courtesy the 2.6 m wheel space. When you fold the rear seats, the boot space effectively becomes 1,064 litres, enough to pack a lot of stuff! The second row of seats could get a little uncomfortable for average sized adults, although your kids would have a great time there. Thus, strict auditors could insist that the Duster be called a 5 seater rather than a 7 seater. The tail light design is rather contemporary, as it should be, and hence adds to the personality of Duster.

    Interior
Let me begin by ridiculing the bizarre placement of the rotary electrical adjustment knob besides the handbrake lever. It is more likely that they forgot to place it at the right position, and would make it pass as a contemporary styling move now. Besides that glitch, there is a lot to like about the interiors. The high mounted driver seat ensures that the driver has a good enough sight of the road and feels like riding a proper SUV. Beige black and cream black dual tone interior options are both graceful. All buttons and control knobs are in close reach of the driver, and hence, apart from the glitch mentioned above, the interiors stand Duster in good stead.

Pure numbers would indicate that the interior space of Duster, in terms of the space for driverís movements, reflects more of a hatchback than an SUV. However, the 8 way adjustable driver seat ensures that there is not even an iota of discomfort. Legroom and headroom are great, so no worries there either. Youíll feel youíre driving an SUV when you see and hold the steering wheel. The top variant of Duster comes with fake wood and brushed aluminium trims. The second row has independent air conditioning courtesy a second HVAC system. All this said, the plastic quality of the interiors could have been better.

    Performance
No problems here. Duster comes in both petrol and diesel variants, although the diesel variant, in all likelihood, will be the preferred choice for most. Here are some engine specs, for the diesel variant.

    Engine: 1.5L K9K dCi engine
Peak power: 110PS, at 3,900 rpm
Peak torque: 248Nm at 2,250 rpm

These numbers are for the higher tuned diesel engine; thereís a lower tuned one as well, with the following specs.

Peak Power 85PS at 3,750 rpm
    Peak torque: 200Nm at 1,900rpm.
For city driving, the lower tuned version could easily attract more eyeballs. I am restricting this analysis to just the diesel version, as this is likely to be the more popular variant. The suspension is good enough to manage on the humble and testing Indian roads. The cabin is properly insulated, so expect a noise free ride.

    The Verdict
Did I mention that the mileage for the diesel variant of Duster puts together a mileage of 20 kmpl? I guess that answers my initial questions to a great extent. With nice interiors, sufficiently impressive exteriors, promising performance specifications, and a pretty decent value tag, the Duster from Renault definitely is a good bet. In fact, this oneís got to come open for discussions if at all you are contemplating a car with a budget of 8 lakhs and more.

Rohit a sedan is a sedan and SUV is SUV they are both entirely different things. Why dont you start a new thread say SUV vs Sedan and list out the pros and cons of both segments and who they would appeal to and so on?

It just may do..........one thing I dont like about the Ecosport is that it looks like its been flattened in the front (crushed basically).........I think ground height wise they are similar.

Renault duster is a pile of scrap. It is not anywhere near an SUV. It is an underpowered metal box which wont go any where unless you floor the pedal. I cannot thank my stars enough that I got a chance to drive it before I made my purchase. I would not advise any one to buy it.

But online reviews states that duster has a better advantage on highways and ecosport leads the way in city traffic. So i guess preferences will decide which one is best .However i loved the way ecosport is packaged to the budget indians. In simple terms i see it as the best suv available for an indian for 10 L .
