I want to buy an externel hard drive.I went through eBay & found few deals.
How is this "Maxtor Basics" Brand? Is it good.I have just heard of Seagate SATA hard drives. What will be a good price for 500 GB/750 GB/1 TB externel hard drive? I found a deal for Maxtor Basics 1TB External Hard Drive for Rs 6750.00? Is this a good deal.Kindly pour in your valuable suggestions.

Aren't external HDD's USB based? So how does SATA come into picture?

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Go 120GB purchased over 2 years ago. It is doing fine. It is a pocket disk. When I purchased it, it was $129.99. For a little higher price ($149.99), Seagate's 350 GB disk was also available but it was a bookshelf disk.

I recommend buying: 1. Seagate 2. Western Digital 3. Maxtor

Actually there is very little to choose in between the brands - all are almost equal.

All 3 are well known brand names in US. I have heard of them since 2000.

Maxtor is popular in India too ... I too have known it for a long time ......... Most popular [in terms of well known thru out India is of course Seagate ]

Though like J4K said all 3 brands are as good as each other .......Unless you r into cutting Edge research u should nt be too concerned about them .....

Maxtor has been purchased by Seagate. You can check for it on Seagate.com also. For Rs.6750 the 1Tb hard disk is very good deal. go for it. Maxtor is giving 3 Years waranty also which is backed by seagate India.

I am using Western Digital 500GB My Book Edition. Which i got for $140, but now its $99.

Try the Transcend Storejet 2.5, in India 320 GB version will cost you around 3.8K.

The Maxtor 1 TB external HDD for Rs. 6750 is a good deal. On eBay, there is a shipping charge of Rs. 150/- outside dealer's city.

    I recommend it highly.

The main thing about externals is their reliability.
Seagate seems to have reduced their warranty period.

    From another source
"For products purchased on or after January 3, 2009, the limited warranty period for consumer electronics, notebook and personal storage bare drives sold to Seagate Authorized Distributors will be changed from 5 to 3 years. Seagate believes that the new warranty period and terms better reflect current industry standards."

    This one looks good

LaCie 301371 Rugged All-Terrain 500GB FireWire 800/ FireWire 400/USB 2.0 Portable Hard Drive (Search at amazon)
A little expensive but great if you can afford it.

For your information, Maxtor is a brand owned by Seagate.

e-Bay is one of the most trustworthy online sites. You money is completely protected. It works like this:

    - You place order and make payment via Credit Card on ICICI online
    - eBay informs seller that payment is collected and istructs for shipping
    - Seller ships
    - You have 7 days to confirm that goods were in good working condition or report an issue
    - If you report that everything is fine, payment is released to seller
    - If not, you are expected to return the goods back to the seller and you need to inform return details to eBay. Your money is credited back.
    - If for seven days, you do not make any comment, it is assumed that your goods were received in proper condition and eBay releases payment to seller
    - each successful shipping by seller increases his reputation count. Thus you can order from reputed sellers only.

eBay is our customer at my organization and I know how this works. I have ordered quite a few things from eBay without issues. The only drawbacks are:

    - you do not get to see the goods for yourself
    - sometimes the shipping charges are high
    - in Maharashtra, Octroi is payable
    - just in case, there is a mishap in delivery, it could cause some anxiety.

I would go for Western Digital.

    Newegg.com is good for electronics.

    Regarding shipping,

To avoid shipping charges, you can use Amazon.
If you have a relative in the US & your order is above $25, they give free shipping to any US destination.

I just ordeed a 16 gb transcend pen drive using a $30 gift voucher that I had.

We are discussing Indian scenario here. If you order from international sites, the buyer will have to pay for customs duty.
