    Default External Hard disk

I use a desktop with Windows XP. The files are stored in FAT system. Recently purchased an External Hard Disk (Seagate Free Agent 500 GB) in which the file storing system is NTFS. Can I use the external hard (under NTFS) along with the Computer (under FAT)? Or will I have to change to either one of the systems (in both the main and external hard disks)?
