Mind is saying "Wait for few months"....

Last week it was Rs. 6750 + Rs. 150 shipping, making it Rs. 6900/-.

Yes, If one waits one can get it cheaper or maybe more for same/less. But I need the storage space desparately to convert all my DVDs for backup purposes.

One thing most people fail to notice. Disk/storage device manufactures quote 1 KB = 1000 bytes. So 1 TB is actually 931.32 GB. Add to that file system overhead, that will take away another few MBs.

    I also saw another deal:
1 TB for Rs 6500 ; no shipping charges ; 6 months EMI, Interest free ( I have ICICI CC)
So the EMI comes around Rs 1084...

The disk arrived last Friday. Had to pay Rs. 200 as Octroi.

As stated earlier, the actual size is 1,000,202,240,000 bytes or 931 GB.

Now beginning the long job of transferring video. Started with Friends. The 40 disks @ 7~8 GB each alone will consume 300+ GB. To transfer all content (at full quality), I will required at least 2.5 TB.

More than ever, need to build an NAS soon.

Would it not be cheaper to create a server connected with LAN with smaller hard drives say 500gb X 8 sata or something like that with some cheap celeron processor ... I guess shouldnt go beyond 12-14k Rs although I have no idea about the hardware prices but you wont need to have things like graphics card or dvd writer and a lot of other things...

If you do plan to build one of them try to keep room for expansion in future

    That is my plan.

    1. I wish to build a media centre PC.
    2. There will be an NAS attached to the LAN
    3. Most home NAS's have 4 bays - probably SATA. I can put high capacity drives on the NAS.
    4. The HDMI out will go to projector and SPDIF/Out will go to Digital In of Amp.
    5. All my DVDs will be ripped and stored on the NAS.
    6. The Windows Vista (Media Centre edition) will allow me to build a menu driven UI for all movies. I can then select to play the movie of choice.
    7. Good bye to popping in/out of DVDs.

Octroi is a local (city) tax in Maharashtra. It is 4% on total value of goods (Sales Price + Duties of any kind + VAT).

Octroi exists only in Maharashtra and is likely to be abolished soon but because of the intense corruption is generates, it is facing stiff resistance on the abolition. The arguers say that this will deprive the cities of much needed income.

i am still in a dilemma

i cannot decide if i should just convert my old desktop [ by adding some more components]

into a media center PC or build a HTPC from scratch with

Either way i ll wait for the prices to come down

If you have a separate AV Receiver, all that an HTPC demands are:

    a) Video Out: All HTPCs should feature a TV-out option, using either a HDMI/DVI, Component Video, VGA, S-Video, or Composite Video output.
    b) Sound Out: Optical or Coaxial Digital
    c) Player: Blu-Ray capable is advised.

But the biggest problem is the noise. Noise from all those fans in a PC can be a big deterrant in a movie, especially when the movie is playing quiet scenes.

    a) Yup

    b) Have to check

    c) Hmmmmm ... i think i ll settle for a dvd player now

Well i dont think thats a problem ... I noticed that when i apply a thermal coolant like artic ice the cpu doent heat up and so the fans dont run fast enough to make noise .....

All intel boards [current] have temperature sensors that control the fan ... i also happen to have a software in my motherboard cd with which i can control the fan speed . IMO the cpu does nt heat up significantly for multimedia apps like movies .

i have to still think of an LCD TV and a HTPC case

Thinking about making it a Gaming cum HTPC

Convert ur old desktop to HTPC. I did same.
Also, u really dont need to add stuff. It depends on how old ur comp was, mine was 2 years old, so i m planing to add a bluray drive and a low end xonar 7.1 .

Dude i asked u abt the Antec Fusion case......its a good HTPC case tell me its costs in ur place. A gaming cum HTPC is tempting, but you will have a HOT system and playing games all the time in front of ur parents will have side effects
