Make sure you never switch of the main power supply to which the UPS is connected unless there is a power failure or you r leaving ur house locked for more than a day .
Otherwise battery gets drained and the more frequently it happens , the more likely its going to go kaput in the near future .

I have used 2 UPSes ... The first one 'Smart UPS' lasted for 1 year only ... After that i have used 'APC UPS'

This one has lasted me close to 8 years with one battery change in the middle .

You can also configure windows xp to Control this UPS .... and configure the way it alerts you inside windows

One example Option:

Alert tone every 100 seconds after the Power failure

i always do it.
but i am area , there is more voltage fluctuations and power cut.
this makes the ups life shorter.
do you know the UPS which has the best AVR.

My first ups was a local, no brand ups... worked fine for 3 yrs but then the battery expired. After that i stopped using UPS.

My new one is from "Numeric" 600 VA , its been only around 3 months since i started using it, so i can't say much about it.

The backup time is 20 mins at full load and 30 mins without monitor.

For about two months i used to discharge and charge the UPS everyday since there was power cut everyday from 6-8 ie during NU time so i used to leave the system on for as long as possible.. So i expect the battery to expire quickly.

This UPS can be controlled using Serial Port but i dunno how.

Mine too, mine too.

But I am only getting maximum 10-15 minutes Back-up with Monitor off.

I didn't get UPS to PC Interface Cable & software CD with the package either.

the main switch which supply power to the UPS should keep ON always , except during outing long dates.
so the battery gets charged continuously and dont get discharges frequently.
this makes the battery life better.
Got it?

with the APC have you get a serial cable to connect to the serial port of the computer and the serial port present in the back of the UPS.

you may got a CD with software to configure the connection.

this software will alert you on power failure and give a rough count down time for the existing backup.it even shuts down by closing all the application automatically.

Oh gr8.

Think u have a high end config/more devices that should exp the lower back up time.

Actually i got the cd with s/w but its not able to detect the serial cable connected to the ups. ( My mobo does'nt have a external serial port so I connected a cable from the serial pins near memory slot to an external connector on the casing.. I think this maybe a problem as well)

Do u want me to send u the s/w, u can try na..

XP provides native UPS support
So There is a simpler step actually

Right click [on Desktop] -->Properties-->Screensaver[Tab] -->Power [Button]-->UPS [Tab] -->Select[Tab]

Select Manufacturer as American power Conversion [APC] .... If you dont have APC choose generic

For APC users
After that select your model and click Finish

If you selected the correct model The configure button should be activated by now .... click on it and configure your settings for your UPS ....

Thats it

I had a confusion over this, I did not know which signaling the UPS was using Negative or Positive.

If i select positive signalling, the system starts and shuts down immediately after loading desktop even while on AC power

and in negative signalling , the system does not shutdown even when the computer is ups powered.
