actually back when this drive came out there were mostly pata comps like mine... whats happenin is that i can't even burn at more than 8x with my 22x drive (single layer) today :lol:... so u can see it wudnt have affected me, and it doesn't affect me till date.
my LG one do it at 2 - 2.5 X......very sad....oooh... so its not only with me. even i am facing the same problem ... my 16x dru-810a writer writes at a max speed of about 8x ... sometimes much lower .. like 3-4x ...hehe .. i recently wrote a dl disk at 2.4x... took about half an hour i think... had a coffee n a nice time till it was over

if the drive causes problems why do you want to buy it from meyes neither did my 810a write at anything greater than 8x.... if in the rare case it did go beyond, the disc wud have a ring on the written side

the problem's not with the drive, its with the sucking pata data transfer rate.

the max speed i get these days when writing even Single layer discs is under 8x. mostly under 4x. Initially it used to perform like butter ... I even upgraded the firmware. but no change. tried various nurning softwares. no luck. BTW, i am using it as an external drive nowadays as my good old laptop doesnt have dvd writer ...

actually this drive was the last drive from benq which was an all rounder. it has a philips nexperia chipset, which was amazing.

the same as me, till its tray mechanism f***d up, then i got the 7220a and then i fixed the tray againi wouldnt have sold it also ... you would have cursed me like anything ..

this was the only other irritating issue i had with the drive.

No, i dont think i am having this issue. I dont write video DVDs much for standalone DVD players. I dont even have a standalone DVD player. All my collection are DVD Rips. They seem to run fine on PCs. Even on standalone players supporting AVI, MP4the same as me, till its tray mechanism f***d up, then i got the 7220a and then i fixed the tray again

this was the only other irritating issue i had with the drive.
this issue exists only for video dvd format. even i cud plaay avi files fine, and they run fine on the comp.
but the issue vanished with my new writer, so it must be some age issue.
i have a few proper video DVDs burnt with this drive but havent tried them on any standalone player. will try to check sometime later on some friend's DVD player.
