Question Multiple Computers on One Computer (as Server)

Hi Friends,

I have an office set up where in I would like to add 3-4 computers, one of the computer technician suggested me to make one C2D computer as SERVER and for another 3-4 computers he said to attach ONE UNIT (smaller then cpu, only box size) that would have port for Monitor, LCD, Mouse & Keyboard & it will be connected with the Main server Computer & would use the processor, OS & resources from that Computer. He said that each UNIT would cost me around 5500 + LCD, Keyboard & mouse. I would like your inputs that is this method good & effective. What is this UNIT called? how much does it worths?

I think it will be better to invest in more than one system. If the server fails by chance, all others cannot work.

depends on what applications you use. if you could give more details it would be helpfull.

for simple apps like MS office, it should be ok, but apps like cad, photoshop,Circuit design etc are resource intensive.

the setup suggested is economical & power saving & will be very useful but it depends on what type of work is required to be done.this type of setup i think is more appropriate for works like databases because there main database is on server & other units simply send/receive the information to/from server while server does the main work of processing through database.

Rs5500 for a dummy PC,hmmm, IMO, just get an ATOM based desktop(if ur needs do not require too much computing power). This will be safer and will consume less power too.

Also, i got 1 full PC being wasted in a box, its a dual core (pentium D), i could give it to u if u require it.

It's a Thin Client setup. But sounds expensive to me. You can use outdated i810 systems without a HDD but with a Network Card which supports network boot (PXE Boot ROM) and as little as 128MB RAM. For Rs. 5500/- you could get 2/3 such systems already. A 8GB server could serve upto 24 clients. But then again depends on what you are gonna use the clients for. Ideal for a cyber cafe, clerical office setup.

thin client - Google Search would be a good place to start
