USB 3.0, the next major revision of the Universal Serial Bus, promises to provide much higher data transfer speeds than its predecessor, the USB 2.0 . USB 3.0 also features some power saving methods.
USB 3.0 can provide up to 4.8Gbps transfer speeds, thats 10x that of USB 2.0(480mbps). Well, these are just theoretical numbers, but even at half the theoretical bandwidth, its still a hell lot faster.
But, you we need such high speeds ?? Well, yes !! With more demand of High Definition (HD, bluray) content and high resolution pictures, we would surely need that extra speed.
So, is it the end on USB 2.0 ? No, not at all. It will take a few more years for it to phase out, as not all applications need these speeds. The initial costs are always going to be high and this will be a slow phase. Good thing is, your USB 2.0 peripherals will work even in USB 3.0 slots.
There are a few new motherboards that support USB 3.0 and a few flash drives that are already in the market. Both have a tad high price, but not too bad.
Bottom line: It will still take USB 3.0 some years to be implemented properly and become mainstream, but for now, USB 2.0 is enough.
