You can confirm it in the Device Manager. It clearly mentions the make and model of the Optical Drive under the DVD/CD-ROM Drives.

And how to find out if it's second hand or not ?

    I don't trust computer mechanics.

If you don't have some knowledge about computer hardware, it's best to buy branded computer/parts. Check some online review websites or forums for guidance before buying any hardware/software. And buy them yourself.

yeah they r not to be trusted unless extremely needed.

Ask him to give its box and user manual or take it back(if he agrees).

But i came accross large number of DVD writers in Nehru Place Delhi(Asia's biggest hardware market) which are without box both from Sony & Samsung these are knows as OEM models and they are selleing on reputed shops. Although they do have boxed versions which are Rs 200- Rs 250 costlier then OEM one.

    BD-ROM @ Rs. 3000 is a great deal.

To test, buy a Blu_ray disc.

If you have a friend in US who is arriving, you can order from him via Amazon. On Amazon, BD's are only $20 or so.
