There are many manufacturers in the (home) routers business.
By far, Linksys makes the best routers but is equally matched by Netgear. Then there are others such as Belkin, D-Link, UT-Starcom, Airlink, Huawei, IO-Gear, etc.
There is no particular difference between them other than the user interface. This is because routers have to strictly comply by the (wired and wireless) networking standards. The other point they may differ is ease of configuration and after sales service/support.

Also there is one more difference in some routers like D-link root is easy to access via telnet. Security is a major factor. In fact , your question had given me an excellent idea for writing on router and firewalls.
