    Default Network Storage Disk

Many people buy external harddisks of various capacities. External disks allow flexibility as you can just take it anywhere with you and attach to any computer via USB. The primary uses of the external HDD are:

    • Storing data and files
    • Backup of PC
    • Store multimedia content so that the same content can be shared with many computers just by attaching disk to each

The majority of the models that are popular are the small/compact pocket disks that can be easily taken on the go.

The other one are large capacity on-the-desk type that are powered externally. I suggest that instead of buying such disks, it will much benefecial to purchase Networked disks. Networked disks are just marginally costlier than standard USB external disks and offer the following features/advantages:

    • Networked Disks are ethernet enabled and come with a standard RJ-45 port. You can simply connect the disk to your router/switch port.
    • Just plug it in to the router, power it on and install the software. Ready to go in less than 30 minutes.
    • Network Discovery - these disks are automatically detected by Apple Bonjour and Microsoft Windows Rally devices.
    • Networked Disks one connected on the LAN can be easily mapped as network mapped drives.
    • The Networked disk contains typical folders such as Video, Photo, Music, Documents, etc.
    • All computers on the network will have access to the disk - so it is shared resource. Multiple people (computers) can use them at the same time.
    • Ethernet (especially Gigabit ethernet) is much faster than USB - wireless network at 54 mbps is more or less same as USB 2.0
    • Share music centrally - have your iTunes or other music library software sync to one central location
    • Download video at a central place and stream it on any computer
    • Manage remotely via web interface. Yes. It is possible to manage these from anywhere in the world. The software allows to do this.

It costs around Rs. 9,800 in India. But there are other models also available from many other brands such as Seagate, Maxtor, WD, etc.

There are no positives/negatives really - or rather it has all the positives/negatives of the external HDD.

The article is to mention a (possibly) better alternative to external HDD.

However, there is a limitation. It can only work over an ethernet. It is designed to be as such.
