Question HDD - Buying Advise is Required from All Of You.

    Sir,

I am planning to buy SATA internal HHD of 1 TB.

This HDD i need for my desk top.

Which Brand Should I buy ?

What is 32 Mb cache memory or 64 MB cache memory.

I think number 7200 on the pack is the rotataion / rpm at which HDD rotates.

Seagate 1 TB with 32 MB cache memory Rs 2900/-

WD 1 TB with 64 MB cache memory Rs 2750/-

Shop owner says that go for WD, because it has a high speed of 64 MB cache memory so it will work fast and most of the photographers use this type of the disk only.

Please suggest what to do ?

I am not a photographer. I need 1 TB for personal data storage.

    Another story :

Shall I go for external ? Please also advise on this point also.

One of my friend suggest that , As I have old laptop with 120 GB HDD.
Make this 120 GB HDD as external and buy new HDD for old laptop of higher capacity 500 GB or 1 TB. And leave desktop untouched.

Please give me a best suggestion.

Pnjani I'm using Western Digital for 4 years and another Sony for 7 months. Overall WD is better I think so, my suggestion will be for WD.

External HDD will not give you as hard support as internal. You will get speed flaws after 5-6 hours of heavy usage (eg-downloading with torrent, copying, DVD writing etc.) once its a little old.

Higher the cache and rpm is better, it gives better performance.
Cache is normally refereed to pre use buffering, like when you watch a youtube video, data is already downloaded before its played. If you skip in a slow connection you will find that the video is being buffered.Cache works somewhat like that.

My Seagate 500 GB hard disk is out for replacement. It went bad due to frequent power cuts (I believe so) as I was using it as external HDD using a Rs. 700 Zebronics case. I later changed to a tech-com case, but found that hard disk is faulty. Lost some valuable data. May be it is singular case, but I was told for size above 500 GB, Western Digital is best.

You both meetdilip and axel are the one who promptly response to my post.

Thanks a lot and hats off too for both of you.

According to both of your suggestions i will go for WD with 64 Mb cache and I am sure that i will get it for 2700/-

For external HDD i infer from meetdilip answer that one should go for company's fitted casing hdd.

Thanks again to both of you.

    Always welcome

For using internal hard disk as external, you can use any case. My latest case from Tech -com costs Rs. 600. I was using external case from Zebronics and connected the power adapter to main line. But there was frequent outages at my place and while power is out, HDD is interrupted to shutdown. It used to happen some 4-5 times a day through out a month. After that it was not getting detected. Now I have a new UPS which have spare back up socket where I can use HDD case adapter too. So don't worry about case, choose one of your choice and make sure that power adapter has backup from battery.
