    Default SATA to USB converter

    Hi guys
I have 2tb seagate (ST2000DM001) desktop 3.5" internal hard drive and i'm looking for sata to usb adapter.
I already have one, non-branded china make. It does work with 500gb HD but my 2tb does NOT work.

Have searched online but didnt find any converter in Indian website. If you are using any kind of sata to usb adapter be it USB 2.0/3.0 or have any knowledge that is compatible with 2tb HD then please me know the details and where to buy.

I'm looking for a converter that requires separate power supply NOT usb powered because i also want to connect my hard drive to my phone via OTG cable.

Thank you for your valuable time.

Is the 500GB drive also 3.5" ? What brand is it? If they are both SATA connectors then I dont see why it should not work with your 2TB drive. Have you checked the pins for any external damage or bent pins etc?

Yes the one 500GB drive was 3.5" Seagate. Yes both were sata and the 2TB was also Seagate make.

There wasn't any damage. When i connected it was showing as single partition while it was having 3 partitons. When i tried to open that it was asking to format. Since i have data in it, i didn't formatted it and connected back to my desktop and it was working fine.

Once i got another brand new 2TB seagate unformatted & 0 partitions and the drive was working fine with desktop. Since it had no data in it. This time i connected that drive to that adapter, it showed as single partition and i proceed with formatting. To my surprise it formatted successfully and worked fine. However after that i have a big nightmare when i connected back that drive to my desktop. The desktop board was now not recognizing the drive anymore not even in the bios. Somehow after a lot of search and forum help i managed to fix the issue myself. The real problem was still not clear however it was assumed that after formatting with that adapter the drive got some bug which made it unreadable by the bios. http://forum.hddguru.com/viewtopic.php?t=24739&start=

Well anyway. I searched on the ebay and many other website for the availability of sata to usb adapters compatible with 2TB drives. After searching i found that non of available converters in 3.5" support more than 1TB or 1.5TB at max. However the one which i found in ebay the seller has advised that as per their individual technical test they found 2TB to be working fine, but the manufacturer listed that adapter to be compatible with 1TB.

I'm looking forward to buy that and i have to confirm with the seller if that claim is true. Will see.

Hummm... Thats new for me too. I didint have an idea that the size of a drive would matter when it comes to cable converters. After all size does matter then eh?

I hope your drive works with the new cable you have ordered. It would be good if you have an option to return it and get a refund in case it does not work.
