Default Linksys router which one to go for

I am planning to buy a linksys router

My choices are WRT54GL and WRT54G
I have searched the net and wiki and found that WRT54G does not support Linux and works on VXworks, so you cannot installed custom firmware

    Is this true?

what is the difference between WRT54G and WRT54GL
i guess the "L" is for Linux

I also want to know if we can install 3rd party firmware on WRT54G?

I am not sure that what you said is true. But I cannot imagine why a router will not work with Linux. A router is pretty much an independent device and has its own firmware and all. It does not depend upon any other device.

But you will definitely need a PC/Mac to configure the setups for the first time. I mean you can still do it using Linux and a Linux based browser but with the Windows/Mac OS based browsers it will be much easy.

Here i am not talking about the Linus OS as in RHEL

i am talking of the firmware which runs on the router is Linux based
I searched on the web and got a lot of details

The firmware running on the wrt54g V5 an above is a VXworks firmware and has only 2 MB of flash memory so you cannot load any Linux firmware which 3rd party have created where it supports high signal strength and over clocking lots of fancy features. DDW firmware can increase the power input to the antenna and thus increasing the coverage in the house and signal strength. you can also over clock the router to 300 Mhz , normal is 200 Mhz

All this is not possible on the wrt54g, you need to buy wrt54gL where L is Linux and it has a 4 MB flash memory which is good space to run linux as a firmware and it is more stable that VXworks
