No offense man ......but such things have never happened to me although i have reinstalled my O.S many times....

Obviously something wrong with the way you reinstalled ur O.S .....May be somebody else can help you out ...just give some more info...like what O.S did you try to reinstall ?

I have always wanted to know what would happen if we "Safely remove your HARD DISK" while doing something very important ......

A silly question: Do you have any removal(USB) devices connected to your USB port.
eg USB Modem, Portable Hard Disk, Wireless Keyboard/Mouse or anything.

If not try reinstalling your USB driver.

He said it was hard disk ......I dont think USB drivers are a problem as you very well know that most O.S come pre installed with these drivers .Ex:Windows Xp

I think he might have set up his hardware settings during installation wrongly...though i am not sure....

this option comes up in external hard drivers which we connect on any USB port but never comes on Internal hard drives as we never use any USB port to connect internal hard drive.
can you please update which OS you are using. Here we can not disable or remap this hard drive as it would be a boot device which is used to load OS.
if this will happen to my system then i will unplug all USB ports and then may try to reinstall OS.

Yeah! I didn't noticed that part. I have installed Xp many times and never remember seeing a option/setting which could have caused this.

Anyway We can only guess so little from the little details that is given to us with the little knowledge we have. Right ?

I've seen this problem, on one of my friend's PC... but we couldn't find a solution yet... formatting also doesn't help... i think its a hardware issue... may be some conflicts with motherboard... what's your PC config.?

    My friend's config. goes here-

AMD processor ( I think its 6500+..somethin like dat...lol... as i'm into intel)
Asus motherboard (again dont remember the model)
    2 gb ddr2 ram
    320GB seagate hdd
    8600 GTX NVidia graphics card..
    1 LG DVDWriter

p.s.- though it shows as safely remove there... but u can't... my friend tried it... so he's kool now... learnt to live with it...lol

I had reinstalled Win XP sp2 OS....Let me tell you its the primary hard drive on the computer...actually this is the problem of a friend of mine....He has an AMD 64 bit processor...no idea about the motherboard...but will soon let you know.....Even out of curiosity we didn't want to check what wud happen if we try to safely remove it... fearing data loss..

I understood that its the primary drive... Its perfectly ok... As I said u can't really safely remove it... not to worry bout dataloss coz of this feature...that i can gaurantee...many systems (I guess AMD with Asus) will show a sata drive as a scsi drive or removable drive because they just don't read them right. But even if you do click on it, you still have to remove the drive physically to end the transmission... Perhaps ur friend will learn to live wid dat notification too...

Ya whatever you told might be true but i personally feel that it might be some misconfiguration during re-installation ..because this had never happened before you know......he was telling that he might done something while re-installing unknowingly ...

I doubt you can change any settings now.... I'm not even confident if re-formatting will be of any help now... Try and lemme know if anyhow u solve it... But if after trying all these things u still get that notification... Consider upgrading bios... but do it only if ur friend really wanna get rid of that notification... I've upgraded bios several times on many machines.. Nothing to worry... Just keep the power running while upgrading...

It's true... I have the same issue. But never bothered about it. Because my primary OS is Linux (Ubuntu 8.04).
