Default What do i do with my old UPS?

Well i have an old ups lying in my house. Its stopped working for 6 months now. It also gave a loud bang when i tried to charge it by leaving it switched on for a day.

Now i'm in trouble how to dispose off the thing in a safe way. I don't want to throw it out in the garbage because i know it will cause serious harm to the environment.

What should i do... does any of u know of some e waste disposal service in delhi?

    You kidding me?

There is no such thing in Delhi ... even if you go and dispose it in a place designated for it it would still be dumped in the garbage mountain near kundli border.

I have a UPS as well same thing happened... it had a small blast and I have it aswelll an dont know what to do with it... I normally give stuff like this to the local electric repairs guy who makes use of whatever he can and then sell it to the kabari or something to get recycled.

Well, then you will never have to worry about buying shoes any more. No more worries about which brand, black or brown, lace or slip on, which sneakers, Nike or Rbk or Adidas, etc. Isn't it?

Well! I suggested something that will at least not lead to e-waste. Didn't I?

If you are asking me, i would advice you to use it for researching the working of the UPS.If you are not interested you can give it to some electrical students who can make a better use of them.

there is a big warning on it saying contains live terminals at high voltage, do not open. And its already given out a blast. So i'm not very keen on opening it ...

For that matter, I have opened nearly everything at home, i'm thinking of leaving this particular thing untouched.

    Default repairs of Ups

I believe in doing it yourself I have done my B.Sc in electrical theory and so am at ease around electronic gadgets, now I am I am a real world H-pilot by trade) but in my sparetime and as a pastime I dwell in electronics and electrical items ...and i hve repaired and replaced My UPS batteries upteen no of times AS U CAN see my Id is also tool man

its very easy , basic knowledge is advised , so I suggest to interest yureself just open it after disconnecting the electrical supply and also switching it off and removing the battery lugs ,
from experience I would say that a protective Baristor or MOV may have burst , its easily replaceable if you know how to solder/desolder a smiliar MOV of same current ratings .... . . it could also be a voltage capacitor , but not likely !!

lastly junking it safely is the best option after removing all reuseable parts , Ie the conection board , circuit board , battery etc

any how if you are still jittery then I suggest you give to some electronic student to experiment and study , thats a philantropical suggestion ...
as for me if the same was un reparable I will store it to scavange parts from in case any other UPS of mine fails , this way I dont have to buy parts I already have many in storage to choose from !!

Default Ups Batteries and FIRE !!!!

    ShAdOwCoN
sorry about this BUT APC inverters have a bad reputation of catching
FIRE ! be careful... be very careful !!

Also... most Branded Ups Batteries have an average Shelf life of appox 2 years MAX , un branded ones even less

if u are getting good standby time still, I recommend ....

clean the battery terminals with CTC ( Electrical contact cleaner )
Blow out accumulated Dust with a Gp Blower , esp near the circuit board and the cooling fan ...
SWITCH TO LCD monitors from the old CRT ones , yure load is reduced on the Ups !

    Really ? ... thats shocking news ! .....

Yeah i dont use CRT .....

But my sys config is pretty heavy .....it sucks some serious power ......

Yeah should clean the insides some day .....

I have used 2 other brands [1 of them local]... but APC has been by far the best ... in terms of life time before first repair ....

Default Why taking tension because of a UPS?????

    What you people are doing???????

Why don't you give it to an electrician, he will take care of it(WHAT TO DO WITH IT AND WHAT NOT).

I like that at least few people are bothered about our environment....

If you'll give your old UPS to electrician then you'll not have anything to do what he's going to do with your UPS and moreover you'll not feel guilty that you are damaging environment.

Even i am concerned about my environment, its a small step but if every single person take it as a duty then INDIA soon will become a developed nation and will have a better place to live.

    See you with that suggestion....
