Default Five new AMD Phenom II processors launched

AMD has taken yet another plunge at Intel with the launch of five new processors aimed at the desktop market. The chips named Phenon II are manufactured using the latest 45 nanometer technology. Of the five available, two have three cores and the rest three are quad cores. The predecessor which was launched in Jan 2009 had consumed a whopping 125 watts, while these newer chips consume approximately 95 watts. But there is no dearth in performance too in these chips.

Unfortunately AMD is playing catch up with Intel as far as the Processor war is concerned. The Phenom 2 is too far behind to overtake Intel as of now. The performance figures for Phenom 2 are not even close to Core i7, the only saving grace is the price point at which its launched.

Its not like I hate AMD but its sad that they have not been able to utilize what they have so far. I mean core i7 is very similar to the Phenom 2 in many ways. They had the first idea for dual core, 64bit processors, Quad core in Desktop segment but just squandered the advantage away. As we speak Intel is already well on the way to producing a new Core i7/Core2Duo/Quad chip on 32nm technology while AMD has just entered the 45nm space (delayed by nothing less then 2 years)

AMD still has amazing idea's, like the Phenom 2 will working with the AM2/AM socket as well as the new socket that they will launch with DDR3 support. Intel on the other hand will fleece the users, prime example is the X58 chipset for which you need DDR3 RAM and is not compatible with most of the Hardware available today..

I guess that is how life is..

we are moving more and more towards "cloud" computing. with the net becoming more important, the processor speed/performance may soon become the not so significant factor.

Alas, till then for running Crysis or using Photoshop we still need brute computing power

yes ... cloud computing may reduce the offline storage use but we still will need the processing power at our end ...

Google Apps is an example of cloud computing. Can u please explain what kind of processing power is needed to process the data?

Cloud computing basically consists of data centers which assimilate the data for the common users. We just need to give them the necessary data and the rest of the processing and storage are done by them. That is the basic funda of cloud computing..
