I have used Norton antivirus, which made my pc really slow and then switched to AVG free edition which too made my please check even slower and then I switched to Avast which is free for home users, and found it did not slow my pc and found it quite good in finding the viruses every now and then. I would suggest Avast.

i'm using avast home too and it's great!
but the only thing i hate them is when they're updating virus database, my connection became very slow and sometimes i can't even open a page!
after finished updating then i could surf like normal

To avoid that you can change the setting to manual updations, so that you can update it every week when you are free rather that it interrupting you when you are having an important work on the net.

I'm a long time AVG-Free user. It kept my last laptop virus-free for 5 years. I'm using it on my new one now. I also use AVG Anti-Spyware for free. It's my personal favorite for anti-spyware. Not only does it have great updates, but it has a lot of cool features like being able to see and remove programs that are connecting to the internet and such. If you're looking for a new anti-spyware program for free, check it out.

Presently I am using Norton Antivirus as i think that it is a good antivirus but the main problem i have it is that it really slows down my computer and this is the main reason i am looking forward to use other antivirus software.

I have 2 years using NOD32 is the most effective AV tool I´ve ever used, Of course I can compare Norton or Symantec AV stuck my computer, Panda was a good software but heavy, Kaspersky one of the greatest no doubt, McAfee I got virus . All virus definitions were updated daily, but I must say NOD32 was my best choice.... regards
