First, a simple crossover cable will not work alone. When you connect two machines it is construed to be a network. In a network, two or more machines can talk to each other only if all have unique IP addresses. The router or a network switch is the device that assigns unique IP address to the machines connected to it.

Since you are having a BB connection, you must be having an ADSL modem/router of some kind. Even the simplest of them, the Type II, has a USB and LAN ports. Others will have multiple LAN ports.

    - Connect one machine to the USB port of the modem/router.
    - The second machine can be connected to the LAN port.
    - Enable "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" from Network Settings of both machines. By default, it is already enabled.
    - Using Windows Explorer on the source machine, right click on the folder (where your files lie) and select "Sharing and Secuirty". Select "Share this folder" and click OK.
    - Check the IP address of the source machine. Click Start --> Run. Enter 'cmd' (without quotes)
    - In the command prompt window, type 'ipconfig' (without quotes)
    - Note the IP address. Let us say the IP address was 192.168.1.3

    - Go to the target machine.
    - Click Start --> Run. Enter '\\192.168.1.3' (without quotes)
    - You will see an Explorer window open and will see the shared folder.
    - Double click on the shared folder
    - Copy/Paste or Drag/Drop the desired files from this (shared) folder to your target machine folder

Well as for me i would say that you just need a crossover wire and then connect two computer in LAN socket. After you do it go to your network connection and then make a new connection after you do it just edit the IP address to 192.188.1.1 ( at computer one ) and 192.180.1.2 (at computer 2) after you do it your computer you get connected.

You are missing one thing and that is you also need to share you hard disk drvies which you would like to put on network and to do this one have to go to properties of a parition and then go to the share option and the click the share this drive option and then click okay/apply and then you are good to go.

Default Connecting when both machines have different OS

Can a laptop and desktop (or 2 desktops) be connected when one is operating with Windows 98 and the other with Vista Home Basic?
