With that money you can even go for dell laptop, which is the best at the moment right now in india. But if you want to choose between lenovo or hp, i would definitely suggest lenovo because i use it personally myself and i am very satisfied with its performance.

Lenovo R60 is a good model. But I won't go by the model - rather I will check features. With a laptop, check for these features:

    a) Lightweight: Very Important. You do not want shoulder pain. Go for lightweight (< 2 kg) even if it means a smaller screen. Lightweights are also costlier.
    b) Processor: Centrino Duo @ 1.66 GHZ or more or equivalent
    c) Memory: 1GB+
    d) HDD: 80GB+
    e) OS: Big No-No to Vista - driver problems. Go for XP Pro instead.

Lenovo adn HP are both good, choose one based on the overall package. The AMD chips aren't meant to be as good as the intel. Also, if you get vista (drivers not an issue for a lappie) get 2 or 3 gig of ram.
