You should have the following:

a) Strong AV software that is updated for virus signatures regularly such as "Kasperkey"
b) Good firewall such as "Zone Alarm"
c) A registry cleanup software such as "CleanMyPC Registry Cleaner"
d) Regular Windows updates

Other than that, I doubt you will require anything else.

Hey Zone alarm is good but use it only when you have a strong ram support.
Its processes continuously keep running and they really drive the machine slow.

Exclamation

I have a 1GB ram with a dual core processor.Even then my computer is taking about 7-8 minutes to boot completely. It was working fine a week back. Then i installed oracle 11g on my comp..the boot time increased from 30 seconds to 2 mins. When i installed kaspersky the boot time did not change much. But after i installed ZONE ALARM this is happening. I had chosen ZONE ALARM not to start at boot up.But if had switched on my modem at boot up,after coming to the desktop the system would restart and then i would switch off my modem. Then after restarting it would say "your system has just recovered from a fatal error".It is after this that it is taking 7-8mins

Can anyone explain this and please help

Do you mean to say that you are running Kaspersky and ZoneAlarm both the same time?
ZoneAlarm has a tendency to suppress any other firewall/antivirus in its way.
Hence just keep one of the both if you have both running simultaneously.

And regarding slow start up ..... though you must have disabled start at bootup for zonealarm ...you will have to disable (or set it to manual) the processes/services of zonealarm.
This can be done by using the services.msc configuration tool.
You can find it in the Administrative Tools in Control Panel.
Search the services and then change their status to manual ...and then stop them and then restart .
So the next time the machine boots up ....everything will be to manual .
So when you will require Zone Alarm then you will have to manually switch it ON.
Also the services of Oracle will also be needed to be set to manual.
So when you want oracle just start those services.
By default all these get started at startup.Hence the machine goes slow.
