    Default Opendns users and accounts

Just curious how many here using OpenDNS also use an OpenDNS account.

Some things you can do with an account are:
    1. Filter and block sites according to category like warez, porn etc..
    2. Block individual sites
    3. Enable collection of stats to track usage.
    4. Create shortcuts to sites

    ->OpenDNS Homepage

Don't be confused, to use OpenDNS just setting your DNS servers to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 is enough. It is not required to open an account, but you can use the additional features and settings I mentioned above if you register an account and add your network.

Simply put OpenDNS is more reliable than your ISP's DNS servers and makes your browsing experience more safe!

By default OpenDNS gives you protection against phishing sites and corrects common typing mistakes in address. Also if a address cannot be found, the service redirects you to a search page with search results.

If you don't want typo correction or redirection to a search page when an address is not found then with an account you disable it in your settings.

For those who register an account and add their network ip:

If your ISP gives you a dynamic IP address i.e. your external IP which changes every time you connect to your ISP, (like BSNL etc.)
Then you need to go to your network's settings in OpenDNS then in advanced settings tick the "Enable dynamic IP update" box and click apply.

To manually update your IP at the OpenDNS site, you can do it from the dashboard at https://www.opendns.com/dashboard/networks/

Or for Windows there is a client which can do this automatically, you can download it from http://www.opendns.com/download/windows/

Remeber if your IP changes and you don't update it at OpenDNS, then your settings there won't apply to the new IP address.

Well I've only used BSNL and OpenDNS works fine here, both my pc and bsnl router (WA3002G4) both are set to OpenDNS servers.

Though sometimes my system has trouble connecting to OpenDNS servers usually in 2-8 am timeperiod, so I also added my router's ip as the third DNS server which seems to work.

Nope, you use can OpenDNS just by using the DNS servers and you get anti-phishing protection by default for which you don't need to open an account,

but if you create a account and add your network ip then you can use additional OpenDNS features like I mentioned in the first post

i had created the account before, but then stopped the ip updater. But am still using its DNS. Since normal usage also applies scam and phishing filters. I don't use any other special filters now.

i have added them 2 router itself, so i can use net using opendns in all OSes.

Anyway, option was not clear 2 me so i said dat both mean da same.

I only use opendns as a fallback option. I would rather give my usage statistics to one provider (my ISP) instead of two. I also do not like the idea of receiving okay response if domain name has not been resolved and does not exist (OpenDNS takes one to some page of its own).

By creating OpenDNS account, and using the OpenDNS software (registered as Windows service), I am able to block porn, warez, etc.

However, the OpenDNS icon appears in the system tray and anyone with admin previleges can kill the task or exit the application. I wish that OpenDNS is able to bring an update that will prevent this from happening and allow the "real" administrator to do changes/quitting/etc.

Most people cite the following benefits of using OpenDNS:

    a) web-content filtering protection
    b) improved speed of name-resolution

I think a) above can be achieved without using OpenDNS - if you have a router, it most probably provides ability to do URL filtering and if you use a firewall, depending upon what its capabilities are, you can be protected against unwanted web-content and can implement URL filtering too, in addition to IP-address based filtering. Depending upon what browser and software you use, you can be further protected. The facility provided by OpenDNS does not weigh favourably against the compromise in privacy.

And I wonder how well OpenDNS would work to provide this protection if DNS resolution is not involved at all (directly accessing a server by IP address). Its web-content filtering etc. will not work then, correct? But if you used other mechanisms to protect yourself, they may still work. Of course, the other mechanisms can be used in addition to using OpenDNS.

    b) is largely immaterial because DNS queries are mostly cached, so it is only the initial hit which is slow (and not that terribly slow) in case of people not using OpenDNS.

However, on certain days and in certain places and configurations, it is useful to have OpenDNS as a fallback DNS server.
