    Default Protect A folder

I know that you can create a password for Excel spreadsheets, but can this be done with folders. So that only you can open them with the correct password!

You have to compress/zip the folder to add password protection. Otherwise you can use a 3rd party freeware software to easily add password protection to the folder.

    Arrow Folder Lock

This is a easy to use freeware folder locking software. After installing, all you need to do is Right Click a folder and input the password you added while installing Folder Lock. You will require the same password for uninstalling the software too.

Arrow Add Password to Compressed Folder

Right Click a folder -> Send To -> Compressed (zipped) Folder. This will create a new compressed (zip) file.

Right Click on that file -> Open with -> Compressed (zipped) Folders.

In the new window. File -> Add Password.

    168.gif

Add the same password in both boxes. Click OK. And this will encrypt the Compressed file.

Note: You will still be able to view the files inside (Will require the password to open the files). So I would recommend using a 3rd party software like Folder Lock than this.

There are many encryption application with the name Folder Lock. The one I mentioned is a 132 KB simple freeware. It only password protects folders.

You were thinking of this one Right ?

    47643674367.gif

This is a 3 MB advanced shareware. It locks and hides folders inside a Locker (Encrypted Folder). And also have a bunch of other advanced features.

I guess this one is ineffective in safe mode...

Yes, It's useless in safe mode. It takes too much time to encrypt and have some other problems (Like, it slows down system etc) too.

Of course you can. Use Microsoft Word's own document protection features for this. You can then zip up the protected document and add a password to the zip file, which would be different from the password you used to protect the document and then one fine day, Murphy's laws will catch up with you, so you won't be able to open your own files... ops:

You would be far better off using PGP to do that instead of zipping up the folder and creating a zip-password. Just my 2 cents. If you zip up the folder and then delete the unzipped version of the files (which you would do, otherwise what's the point - your unsecured files are still available), they (deleted files) can still be recovered. As they say, information once created is not lost, it just can be made invisible for a certain level of capability.

Encrypting the full logical volume is a better solution. Every encryption solution, unless it (and corresponding decryption) is done by dedicated hardware has a performance penalty, IMHO.

hey just use any "Shred file" software. it destroys the file by overwriting random content.
warning:if you do shred for file, then you cant get it back in any means. so be sure about that, before start shredding.

then i come to encrypting the full logical volume,
i guess we dont want that much security to save our personal file.
    just a password is enough.
encrypting and decrypting absorbs resources and make us wait, but a password lock is very light on resource.
so i suggest to go for password lock.

Lot of folder protecting software is available but if you open in 'safe mode' your OS then most of the software does not work like "folder lock software" but i have one software "Folder security professional 2.52" It works in safe mode also It can hide and block the access of folder and file.

Hide Folder XP is another shareware which also works in Safe Mode. And it's easy to use too.

PS. It against forum rules posting warez/pirated content. FAQ Warez rules.
