Rep Power: 14 | You can avert a major portion of computer security issues by being cautious. You must constantly remind yourself that your security is your priority. You should be strict on yourself at all times and never compromise on anything when it comes to computer security. Here are some dos and don’ts with regard to computer security: Have a reliable computer antivirus program and remember to renew its subscription before it expires. Most of us tend to ignore the renewal reminders. Keep your antivirus (Best Anti-Spyware And FireWall) definitions up to date. If you cannot remember, set automatic updates and make sure that you set these scheduled updates at least once in a week. Do not download anything from unreliable sites. We have an affinity towards things that are free whether it is free music, free screensavers, free software programs etc. When we download stuff from the internet, we are subjecting ourself to a tremendous risk. We can never be sure what kind of malicious tools will get downloaded along with the software or the music that we download. Pay attention to security warnings. When you computer gives you a security warning make sure to read the security warning in full and try to attend to the issues as a first thing. Never click on links that are not known. When you get mails from unknown sources, never click on links that come in those mails. Always type the URL in the address bar, because the link may not always take you to the right place. It may read something but the landing page will be something different. Run virus check before opening attachments. Many of us try to skip this step and subject ourselves to unnecessary risk. It would just take few seconds to run a quick security check on the attachments that you get via mail. It will go a long way in protecting you from unnecessary security issues. Never shop in sites that do not have an SSL certificate. These days we shop extensively using online shopping sites. Before you start supplying your personal information and credit card information make sure the website that you are using is a reputed website and that they have SSL security certificate for safe credit card transaction. Be attuned to changes in your computer. A good driver knows his car well. Similarly, you should know your computer well. Pay attention to unusual behavior of your computer such as sudden shutting down of browsers or shutting down of the entire system, frequent hanging even when only a few applications are open, slow processing speed etc. These things need not necessarily mean that there is an intruder into your system, but it can be a vital indication, which you should not ignore. Do not rely on free antivirus programs (six months Trial internet security suit) and free spyware programs. As much as possible, try to buy or subscribe reliable antivirus programs rather than relying on free software. Remember to regularly scan your system for virus and spyware. Please feel free to add to the list as this is all I can think of right now. Will keep adding in future.

Rep Power: 10 | Its always better to use an geniune anti virus. Now I am using Kaspersky Internet security (1 year licence). Intially i was using pirated versions of AVG, Eset NOD32,BitDefender...I was using NOD32 for a very long time. It worked well for few months then I wasn't able to update the anti virus. These pirated ones don't give complete security...Kaspersky even if you use an pirated one, when you update it you will get a message saying that the key is black listed.. Then I bought Kaspersky from eBay. 3 users ; 1 year licence for Rs 600. We three friends use it,thats Rs 200 per head. Its not bad... Always better use a orginal anti virus. Its not that costly also. Check out eBay..You may find some good deals.

At a time when, spyware were in their infancy, and AV were designed only to protect user fro virus, I used to frequently get infected by spyware, primarily from d/l free XP themes. It was quite some time before i realised y my system/net was getting slower. So awareness to new threats all plays an important role in maintaining compter security, in fact there are certain websites dedicated to providing latest info on security issues and their solutions. People who are not computer savvy should atleast take the effort of getting help from friends to keep their computer secure. | |

| Amor vincit omnia | U see the problem of NOD32 pirated version is as follows. When it is patched then the software will download the updates from trial server rather than the main server. Hence the net effectivity of the parent software is nullified. Always use genuine username/password which is *cough* available *cough* |

Rep Power: 2 | You can also download the updates from the main server through its web site, then install that update manually(offline). dont know about NOD32 but it can be done with Kaspersky. |
