Things to look for in a phishing email
Phishing is an attempt by fraudsters to ‘fish’ for your banking details. A phishing attempt is usually in the form of an e-mail that appears to be from your bank. The email usually encourages you to click a link in it that takes you to a fraudulent log-in page designed to capture your details.
Here are some of the things to look for in a phishing email:
Generic Greeting
Phishing e-mails are usually sent in large batches. The fraudsters use generic names to save time so that don’t have to send e-mails one by one to all recipients. If you don’t see your name, be suspicious.
Forged Link
A phishing e-mail usually encourages you to click a link in it that takes you to a fraudulent log-in page designed to capture your details.
Requests For Personal Information
Phishing e-mails usually intend to trick you into providing your personal information. Hence if you receive an e-mail requesting your personal information, it is probably a phishing attempt.
Sense Of Urgency
Such e-mails attempt to convey a sense of urgency or threat. They do this by making you think something has happened that requires you to act fast.
Example: “Your account will be closed or temporarily suspended if you don’t respond.” or “You will be charged a fee if you don’t respond”.
Always Remember
If you receive an e-mail requesting your Internet Banking security details like PIN, password, account number, credit/debit card number, CVV, etc. you should not respond. Instead, delete such e-mails . If you happen to open one, do not click any link or attachment it may contain. Report such e-mails to your bank right away.
