I have been using POP3 access with my free yahoo.co.in a/c for the last 2 years through Thunderbird. I also have Gmail configured also, so Thunderbird simultaniously checks both a/cs.

U can get the details in your yahoo.co.in a/c at Options>POP access and forwarding

    the settings
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): in.pop.mail.yahoo.com, Use SSL, port: 995
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): in.smtp.mail.yahoo.com Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication
    Account Name/Username: userID @yahoo.co.in
    Email address: userID @yahoo.co.in
    Password: Your Yahoo! Mail password

Even though Gmail is better, they are still in the third place as far as users are concerned. It is touted that they will be the number one email service provider by the end of this year.

    yes. absolutely.
Just make sure to check "use authentication" option so that the client uses the mailID and password while sending the mail.

BTW, I use Thunderbird, have not used Outlook express for almost 4 years. So my memory is a little rusty.

I also have Gmail A/c configured in the same Thunderbird, and there is no problem in sending mail for that also. Gmail also require the "use authentication" option.

Surely u dont think yahoo and google is that stupid to let users download email, but not to send emails !!

Definitely its a two-way process. Emails can be send and received using OE.

    No it would not.
However, the POP3 in yahoo.co.in works only on the inbox and not on folders. So if u have any filters activated to directly move certain messages to any folder without them ever appearing in the inbox, then such mails would not be downloaded.

One alternative is using Thunderbird with the add-on "Webmail" instead of OE. The webmail add-on allows downloading mails from specified folders. So u have full control on the folders from which to download mail.

Thunderbird with the add-on "Webmail" allows u POP3 access to @yahoo.com IDs also.
