No avast doesnt slow down the system.
Avast pro is now among the top 5 av.
Im using it , its really nice...

Actually it only slows down the system if have less RAM.I used to have 512 MB of RAM and then I had some system lag, but then I upgraded to 1.5 then 2.5GB, and its running fine now.

But again its a good antivirus, and provides an option rare in free antivirus softwares i.e., boot time scan.

So I think that neutralizes all those flaws.

its doesnt slows down, i even ran it in a comp having 256 mb ram & 1.8ghz celeron procc , & u can give a try to NOD 32 (though its not a free AV)

I dont think it really slows down the system... But the latest norton and bitdefender are really light on system resources... Bitdefender takes sth between 15 - 20 mb of ram when real time protection is enabled
