In computer networks, a proxy server is a server (a computer system or an application program) that acts as a go-between for requests from clients seeking resources from other servers. A client connects to the proxy server, requesting some service, such as a file, connection, web page, or other resource, available from a different server.

A proxy server has two purposes:

    * To keep machines behind it anonymous (mainly for security).
    * To speed up access to a resource (via caching). It is commonly used to cache web pages from a web server.

There may be times when you might want to use an anonymous free prfoxy server so you can safely surf the net without your information being available to hackers, spammers and scammers…. or anyone in your office, for that matter!

Web proxies are used for hiding your IP address and by-passing work, school or other web filters. For instance, if Facebook or Myspace is blocked on the computer you are using, you can easily gain access by using a web proxy like http://kproxy.com

P.S.- But there is a high chance that sys-admin of your office can track ur activities... So I advice not to do it.

    plus
those publicly available anonymous proxy servers can log and monitor user's traffic.

They log or dont log is secondary, but logging is highly possible. They can spy on the content if they want. that is why transferring of high sensitive data (online transaction) over these public anonymous proxy servers should be avoided.

With most of us having dynamic IP's, which keeps changing from time to time, are proxies really important?

Web proxies can be used to over-ride the filter setttings and browse the blocked site at situations described in my previous post!

In Dubai orkut is banned... People used to surf that portal by using web proxies... now almost all web proxy sites are blocked there...

this doesnt hide your identity to ISP, but proxies do.

    TOR!! Ofcourse its a proxy.

But i would not say it as proxy because it does more than what a proxy does.

Proxy is a term widely used for HTTP and HTTPS protocol traffic but TOR does more than that. It suports IM, remote logins and other stuff.

you can see here Tor: anonymity online

if you use firefox, you can also download Tor-proxy.NET Toolbar and give a try.
