    Thumbs up Erasing a CD/DVD

    hi,

Just wanted to know . i have a DVD (A write once DVD) which i have burned without using the multi-session option . It contains some sensitive data like company related passwords and stuff . Is there anyway i can completely erase/destroy the data/DVD ????? . I hear that its possible to even read data from broken discs using some tool ?

Easy way to get around it:
    1) Get some good pointed object and scratch the disc completely with it.
    2) Break the disc into more than 5 parts, or into bits if possible. :devil2:

    F's suggestion is correct.

Hold the disk in a pair of tongs and hold it over a lighted gas stove, writeable surface facing the flame. About 2 minutes should do it.

Quite true. Simple and no chance of recovery.

Why do you need to pollute the air, if you can do many other safe things?

I am afraid even that is true. They give out toxic fumes. I just focused on the question. But such recoverers are not popular in our country as in Europe. In our place it simple goes for recycling.

And there is no need to take lots of items and go on holding, when you can just take a rock or anything else and scratch it down and break it. That's more than enough if your enemy () is not a wizard.

You are not going to burn 1000's of discs - maybe 2 or 3 at most 10. And I am not advising in burning them to cinders. Just enough to destroy the written layer.

    Yes you are right
Use a sharp blade and swipe the written layer into powder?
    Satisfied?

What if everybody start thinking that everyone else would burn just 'some' CDs?
Then, they will start thinking while burning every CD/DVD, "Isn't this just one? It won't do much harm."
And, thousand 'ones' make one thousand.
Subsiding of this thinking, in just thousand minds is another thing that need to be thought upon.

Break it , scratch it , burn it , put some acid on it or do whatever you want.
Why didnt you encrypt or password protect your data before burning it ?

    Thumbs up

^ Because i am prone to forgetting passwords .... which may be disastrous .... and from what i have seen encryption/decryption also requires passwords ....

anyways i ll use the fire method ..... i need to destroy just one or 2 discs once in a while ...very rarely ........Generally i give all my useless dics to the paperwala

Agreed. But the plastic discs of CD/DVDs themselves are bigger pollutants.

    That's another point.
But, as Shadow said, we can give it to the "paperwala" (), and it can be recycled.

Scratching the CD is the best option, just make as many scratches on the CD, and snap it 4 pieces. Its quite simple, not so much hard work either. And if even this your not satisfied, throw the 4 broken pieces of the CD in 4 different places.

Default Scratch it but on the rough side!

Take a blade and scrach on the label side untill all the sliver-like material comes out and you get a transparent plastic cd/dvd.

Never try breaking a CD/DVD. It is the worst mistake that you will do. Breaking the disc is very dangerous and risky job - it requires a lot of force and you can cut your hand badly.

The disc breaks into two main pieces but a lot of small/sharp shards are formed - some are very tiny and these are just as bad as glass.

    I will not recommend this.
