What resources does the suite consume?

I have AVG Free on my home desktop and McAfee on my laptop. Both hog the resources. I am looking for a lightweight AV. I heard that Norton AV 2009 is good in that respect.

(p/s. I am not looking for AV flames - this is best, that is best, etc.)

kix in your case, your config is more to be blamed rather than AV itself i guess.

PS: I don't like either of them anyway.

My desktop is old, I admit but my laptop (Lenovo R60, 1 GB RAM) is not bad.

I have long thought about upgrading my desktop but always felt that it was not really necessary.

BitDefender sells for $25 whereas Kasperkey is $40. These are recommended as top two here.

I personally don't believe most of the comparisons. But usually the individual reviews by various sites like softpedia etc seem fine.

anyways i stick to norton, coz its my favorite.

And kaspersky is much cheaper than that.... around Rs.450 for 3 PC KAV (so effectively rs. 150) .Also check out in eBay too. I guess their price differs very much in different countries.

But the best thing is if you know where to look, there are always 6 months of KAV on offer somewhere. So u can continously renew it with those offers.

I would recommend ESET Nod 32 Antivirus + Antispyware. Not the Internet Security Suite. Security Suites always are resource hungry.

I am looking for a pure AV software - don't care much about the suites. They are bloated with nonsense, IMHO.

I'm gonna try out Earthlink protection control center which is basically KAV provided by the Earthlink ISP to its subscribers for free untill 13 Nov 2010.

well kix imo, NOD32 is the lightest thing in AV i ever seen. i tested the business edition on my lappy & it consumes 70-78mb (task bar figures).....while KIS only indicates 40-45 but in background it eat 200mb + (to confirm take note of physical mem available then exit the KIS & again take a note of physical mem available). i have tested these things many times

Have you tried Avira ? I switched to Avira almost a month back. I have tried almost all others and my Windows 7 has Avast. I feel Avira is ok. My PC used to have 512 MB RAM and with Avira, I never had a resource consumption problem.

Which version are you using? Are you using the NOD 32 Security suite?

NOD32 uses only about 7-8 Mb in my computer when in idle state (backgroud monitoring).
