There are a no of free firewall which are so good at doing their job. Prominent names are Comodo and Zone alarm. Both are free. I use Zonealarm free.

sygate, before it was taken over by symantec, was a very good one.
but the revised version is useless.
If u can get the earlier version from someone, go for it.

true they are free, but they r becoming too bloated these days, esp commodo with AV n stupid toolbars. SAdly i'm still using it coz of no other good options.

Try Sygate or Zonealarm. Once tried Ashampoo out of curiosity, it is ok.

Yes , yes I do that (meaning i remove the tick mark). but a security company using adware doesn't convey a good image, thats all....

true.. but if it was something like in zonealaram then i think its fine.. cause they are providing an award winning firewall software for FREE , i think they deserve to add toolbar links..

well webroot one was very complicated... i've decided the ultimate solution: Not use an outbound firewall at all :w00t:

Some reasons why: In all the time i have been using these firewalls (more than 4 yrs), i have just had to block access to a malicious application just once. And i dont even know whether it was successful in blocking that app. This app made its way to the comp due to my own ignorance too.

Most of the times they just cause problems with other applications.

and i dont have any applications that i need to block from phoning home.

Having a HIPS installed along with an antivirus is probably the most that is needed. Already am behind a router and have windows firewall enabled as well so am now just gonna take it easy and stop wasting my time on these firewalls.

    Peace!
    DON'T beam me up, Scotty!

It will be wise to use a firewall. Especially if you are a frequent downloader using torrents.

u mean to say if i download software (pirated) or executables from torrents, which i do not. hence i've managed to remain clean.
