Use Avast 4.8 as Ad Blocker

This is similar to Opera web browser's Content Blocker feature. You can use Avast 4.8 to block Advertisements/Popups in websites.

The steps are simple. It's not the best way but if you have a browser like Internet Explorer or Google Chrome which doesn't have or support an Ad Blocker/Filter, then this maybe the best choice. Works with all web browsers.

To Block Advertisements using Avast

Web Shield component is required for this to work. It is installed automatically with Avast unless you deselect it.

Avast URL Blocker doesn't have a filter Import/Export feature so you will need to repeat this each time you reinstall Avast. Ctrl+C (Copy) and Ctrl+V (Paste) shortcuts will make it a little less hard.
  1. Right click the Avast notification/tray icon (a) and click On-Access Protection Control
  2. Select Web Shield -> click Customize and then URL Blocking tab (If Web Shield is is not visible then click Details button to see it)
  3. Select Enable URL Blocking (√) and click Add button to add filters/URL to block.
  4. After adding the filters click OK and it's done.

The best part is Avast URL Blocker accepts wildcards (* & ?).

Wildcard
s * & ?

The wildcard asterisk (*) is to substitute any zero or more number of characters which starts with the given word [eg: goog* can be google, googling etc] and the wildcard questionmark (?) is to substitute any single number or alphabet (A to Z or 0 to 9) [eg: Ni?e can be Nine, Nile etc).

Example: If you need to block all Google webpages, instead of entering each Google addresses like www.google.com, www.google.co.in, www.google.co.us etc, the filters http://*.google.* and http://google.* will do the trick.

Normally you will get a clean page without any "blocked" or "error" messages when you access the website with blocked Ads. If you try to access a blocked website you will get a similar page like this,

And if the Advertisements is displayed in another frame by a non blocked website/URL, then you will see a message like this (instead of the advertisement),
