Default Cmdagent.exe using up 99% resources

I am out traveling and this poor old laptop has got Comodo security suit and it was not updated for about 15-20 days as I hardly ever use my laptop at home so today as I am out of town it was time to get my rusty laptop to do some work but to my surprise as soon as I started it the Comodo update it downloaded has done something to itself and this process : cmdagent.exe is using up 99% of the resources and my processor is running at 100%

Went to a few forums using someone else's lappy and found out that comodo's update which was released today has some bug (as per comodo forums)

My problem is that my laptop is a pentium 4 and has a single core and there is no way to shut down comodo which is set to start up with windows..

I have restarted the laptop atleast 20 times now and the moment it boots this stupid cmdagent.exe starts eating it up again and when I open the task manager and try to shut down the process cmdagent.exe it says access denied.

Does anyone know anything I can do to shut this crap down to sort it out some how?

Are there any other comodo users who got the same issue with this new update?

Try starting in Safe Mode [F8] -> run msconfig -> select Startup tag -> Disable (remove tick mark) Cmdagent.exe.

You are now chatting with 'Brian'
Brian: Hi! How may I help you today?
    you: Hi Brian
    you: my id is ******
you: I already had comodo installed but I had to uninstall it coz this file cmdagent.exe was taking up 100cpu
you: and there was nothing I could do to sort it out and this probably happened after the latest update... or not may be
you: what do I do? install it again?
    Brian: Install it again yes.
you: same file or download it
you: any idea what went wrong with this cmdagent.exe so I know what to do if it happens again
you: it took almost 6 hours for me to find out what was wrong and I still dont know but uninstalling compodo worked
    Brian: It won't happen again.
you: it would really help if you just told me why it happened
Brian: Download again from the website.
you: was there a bad update or what?
you: Brian this chat transcript is gonna be posted here : http://www.indiabroadband.net/comput...resources.html (Cmdagent.exe using up 99% resources)
you: please try not to ignore me as a satisfactory reply would help a lot of your customers out there...
Brian: 1 - Reboot your computer in safe mode
Brian: To enter to the safe mode, you need to press F8 button before Windows starts booting until you see the boot menu. In the boot menu, select the safe mode.
    Brian: 2 - Delete the file in c:\program files\comodo\comodo internet security\scanners\bases.cav
Brian: 3 - Copy c:\program files\comodo\comodo internet security\repair\bases.cav to c:\program files\comodo\comodo internet security\scanners folder(this action will replace the current bases.cav file with the original bases.cav file that comes with the installation).
Brian: 4 - Restart your computer and Update your virus database again.
Brian: after these 4 steps, everything should go back to normal.
Brian: This is how you solve that problem with cmdagent.exe at 99%.

    you: thanks a ton.
    you: Have a nice day.

Hope this would help others with the same issue.

I think this cmdagent.exe means Comodo Agent Service which belongs to comodo internet security or comodo firewall, you will not allow you to end or terminate it as its part of comodo security.

In this case first try to restart your computer and after that it should work normal but if it is not behaving after restart then you may need to uninstall this comodo

I'm officially pissed at Comodo for this. I've had the exact same thing happen on 2 computers now... 1 is a Windows XP SP3 machine and the other is a Windows 7 PC. Same thing at the same time... I boot up the computer and it is slow as anything.... I wait 10minutes before Task Manager will load and it says cmdagent is taking up all the CPU. No way to end the process. Of course on the Windows 7 PC I have trouble booting into safe mode, so I have to reinstall the OS. Comodo won't be going on any of my machines any more.

I think I will give Comodo another chance as this was the first time it has happened to my machine and it was a bad update which caused it... Agreed that comodo screwed up and we all pay for this service and they should be testing their updates and keep mending it untill it is bug free and ready to use but unfortunately this was not the case this time.

If this happens again due to Comodo I am saying bye bye to Comodo for ever.

I am very much upset with all these AV suites. They take up tons of memory and slow down the performance.

Granted that viruses are getting stronger and powerful and hence the AV suites need to be stronger also. But:
    • Why do the services take up so much memory?
    • Why can't the AV agents sleep when there is no activity? Instead the AV agents wake up at that time.
    • The McAfee McShield process on my laptop takes anything from 80K to 150K. The Framework service takes another 15~30K.
    • EngineServer.exe takes anything from 20K to 120K.
    • The AV suite start scanning files for viruses when computer is idle. I cannot turn this off because the domain admin has prevented access. (Well I could turn this off by logging in safe mode but I would be in breach of corporate security policy).
To be honest, I have not been attacked by a virus in the past two years but I hate the performance sacrifice that it brings.

I am using Microsoft Security Essentials for Antivirus. The settings options are less but only uses very little memory to run compared to other antivirus software. 20K when idle and below 60K when performing full scanning. The scanning, virus removing/quarantining, updating process are slow compared to other similar software but still doesn't cause any trouble for other software.

    @admin
cmdagent.exe is part of Comodo AV application.
One advice : Reboot the system.
    another : Download latest version.
    disconnect Internet.
uninstall OLD version. Install latest version.
    Then try.

I had to remove Microsoft Security Essentials because Microsoft improved their WGA security as I am using pirated version of Windows XP. Now I am using Avast 4.8 personal edition.

I don't know about the detection rate differences between antivirus software, but Microsoft Security Essentials is really good in my opinion.
