    Question torrents being watched

I was looking up some torrent sites(isohunt) and found many of the newly created torrents are being reported as being WATCHED. The downloaders say they are receiving legal calls over Copyright infringement.

I know these may be arising only in the US or may just be a false alarm, but being just an average-internet-know-how user I need to know whether there is anything to worry about sitting in India and if there is any way of protecting from being tracked by these agencies. pl tell

I guess it's just a rumour. Else, it would have been in news.

Yes, Mininova is already limited to publish torrents of the materials which don't have a copyright. Damn these courts.

Mininova has taken down tarckers quite a while ago. I myself came to know of this just a week ago. But I am not a regular downloader. I am surprised that the large torrent community in this forum here made no posts to this effect.

I don't think it is possible to identify all those users in a peer to peer sharing networks. Most of the copyright companies target users who share quite massive amount of copyright files with other users. Recently there was a women in US indicted for copyright infringement if I am correct.

The ISP's do that, I believe. But whether this is a rumour or truth, no one was able to verify as people are afraid to download from torrents.

Yes. Indeed they can. They can track down the ISP and send notices to the ISP's. ISP's have a record of who is downloading what and which IP was assigned.

In India (and China), ISP's are not tracking torrents.

Mininova was served a notice and agreed to remove all trackers of copyrighted material. I am in full support of the move. But there will be others who will "rise" to the occasion and of course there are private trackers too.

Mininova lost a case and deleted all pirated content.

Yes they are being watched but majority on this forum lives in India where even Muderers go scot free.... talk about illegal torrent downloading?? every single subscriber in this country who has one of them night unlimited plans from any of the isps downloads using torrents and a huge percentage I would say more then 90% download movies and porn... go get them

More then 80% of Indian broadband users will be behind the bars or be paying fines if there were any monotering going on by Indian agencies and Americans dont rule this country hence cant do anything to some one sitting in India.

We live in a country where most illegal acts are done taking a bribes less then Rs500.... Majority of us use pirated operating systems and buy pirated music and movie dvds... do we not?

India doesn't even have good policing in place leave alone policing the cyber space

Bollywood producers have not come together to bring down sites hosting bollywood movie trackers and thats the reason sites like desitorrents have been running without a hitch all these years

Very true. But I read this article in a newspaper, monitoring agencies are watching, but I agree with you.
Users time their machines for downloading etc...
if I tell any of my friends piracy is bad, they say who is going to catch me.Everybody is downloading, who will catch them ??

I know things are not how they are supposed to be here in India.I think it will take ages for rules to come into place with everyone co-operating to abide by it.

There are also the different views people have but,I think there will be a lot of freedom for internet users in India, until a law comes in to force which may be of help to prevent privacy, but to the others users free downloads will not be available, which may bring forth another kind of situation.

Don't forget the highest torrent downloads happen in the US, UK and the west in general, as per reports. Did you not see the country IPs when you torrent something?
