No doubt Norton provides good security and keeps your PC and data safe, its always good to use paid security products. I am not sure why but I am totally not convinced with Microsoft Security Essentials, I used it for a week and again rolled back to AVG Internet Security.

NIS and MSE cannot be honestly compared to each other. They are different software types.

NIS is a suite of security applications: antivirus, antimalware, firewall, search filters, browser toolbar, email security, others...

    MSE is an antivirus/antimalware application.

I have not used any PAID AV or AM etc for past 18 months or so.
Only MSE. Sometimes MalwareBytes Antimalware Free edition.
Except BSNL Rajasthan PPPoe dialer application, no other virus/trojan
    Malware intercepted.
Downloaded ZoneAlarm Firewall/ Spybot but did not install !
Firefox does not allow some web sites/links to open , with a warning of Phishing attack etc.
All downloads checked for Virus by FF also.
I have used earlier ZA/ AVG /Avira ( full version Free offer for one year ) etc

For Available FREE applications link has been given by me.

There is no Hard and FAST rule that only PAID AV/AM/FW applications should be installed.
This scan/Warning is also FREE! run just now!

I totally agree that there is no hard and fast rule that only paid AV applications should be installed but its always good to pay for the services which you are using

    Why should I pay?
When i have a genuine OS installed ( paid for),& MSE is not charged.
( and also MS malware removal tool updated every month: again FREE)

Only those using pirated OS/ downloading from torrents etc,
    should worry about infection !
    and look for detection!!
    & pay for protection !!!

My post giving a link where Norton is ranked 11 gone for moderation.
    http://anti-virus-software-review.to...om/index2.html
This is for those who use FREE applications and
    hope for the best !!
but prepare for the worst !!
    http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/ten-bes...irus-programs/
    Conclusion

There are a lot of great free anti-virus programs out there, but what you use is mostly a matter of preference. Myself, I use Microsoft Security Essentials on my Windows machine because it’s free, lightweight and will never ask me for money. But I also make sure I always have Malwarebytes on my thumb drive for quickly removing viruses and malware from the computers of friends and family..............
