Default Network attached Storage (NAS)

Has anyone got an NAS at home? How does one go about making it?

My requirement is as follows:

- I find it a pain to hunt for my DVD's to watch
- I have also found that some (old) DVDs are deteriorating and they get stuck or stutter at layer change
- I am planning a media center HTPC and will convert/store all DVDs to PC/NAS
- Using software and menus, I would like to watch any movie I like.

I'm planning to implement a similar setup myself.

I thought of getting digital media reciever like say Netgear EVA8000. Yhat would help my case better as I have lot of DivX and DVD format films in my PC already, and few in my laptop.

And I'm also thinking of buying Netgear's ReadyNAS and transfer all my pictures, movies, and music into it, and make everything available wireless.

HTPC is not particularly suitable for my needs and for accesing different points of storage (like hard disk from my laptop, other Pcs, etc) I'm looking at, and could be a tad too expensive, and I'm also not sure of different formats playable.

But I'd like to be informed about it, and if it convinces me, I'd reconsider. Thanks.

Alternatively, any idea on Xbox 360 as the digital media reciever?
