I have a notion that yahoo uses UDP protocol to transfer larger flash/gif ads, so if u block UDP for ymg (leaving TCP open) in ur firewall, u may save the day. This is just an idea and i may well be wrong.

@preeti
do tell us what happened.
I dont think any firewall can block UDP because its a Protocol [Universal Datagram Protocol]

I am assuming that it may be disabled but never blocked

I think Firewall can block TCP(Transmission Control Protocol)/UDP(User Datagram Protocol) both
various type of firewall techniques are
Packet filter,Application gateway,Circuit level gateway,Proxy server
among this Circuit level gateway has the security mechanism which applied when TCP/UDP connectivity is setup.

Dont know about other firewalls, but my bitdefender firewall can block usage via UDP protocol for any program (individually, no need to block it for all). It can also block TCP protocol usage for any program. I m more than 100% sure and know this as a fact. Done it myself on numerous occasions. Its both theoratically possible and practically done by my Bitdefender firewall.

Now that I think of it, data transfer in each direction through each protocol can seperately be treated through firewalls if the firewall gives user the freedom. That means I can block upstream data transfer for a program through UDP/TCP while leaving downstream open and vice versa.

For your Y ! Msgr ,try out a system restore & a registry cleanup. If these dont work try out Trillian messenger (Cerulean Studios: Creators of Trillian and Trillian Pro Instant Messengers) which is a combination of popular online messengers.

Gaim/Pidgin is good for simple instant messaging. But if you prefer Yahoo Messenger because of the animated smilieys (I don't see any other reason ) then Skype have a better set of them.

Ofcourse we can block access via certain protocols

Every firewall selectively blocks malware ..... this is equal to blocking access via TCP/ip or UDP protocol for a selective apps

I know this can be done

the archer meant is, just an update for the windows installer program
Not the whole windows operating system reinstall as you thought.

some new version third party programs and application would be customized to get installed in particular installer program version.
so if you need to install that application , you need an updated installer program

note:windows installer is a program or app, which will help other applications to get installed in the windows.

Just check the link he provided and you'll most probably understand.
It is just an update for Windows.

I think she has reinstalled Windows.
That might be the reason why she said that her computer needs some sorting.

You know, the computer problem from before. First I thought it's a problem with Graphics Card. I removed the Graphics Card and connected the Monitor to Motherboard. I can Boot in to Linux (Ubuntu) in low graphics mode. But when I try Windows XP it gets stuck after showing loading bar. I wasn't able to fix the problem yet. So I was thinking of reinstalling to if it works. With Graphics Card on I can't even get to BIOS. The Monitor isn't starting at all.
