    Default Saving Photos

Do you guys save your photos on disc or just leave them in your computer?

If you save them on disc, do you zip the file or save the photos as they are in their format?

I store all the important pics ie which i want to keep for long time, on 2 copies of Disk (CD,DVD) with their own default formats i dont zip them.

Normal pics on the PC itself

Storing a lot of pictures (read 1000's) will make its access/copying slower, and even the generation of thumnails will take longer.

On the other hand, if files are stored in zip and the CD develops a scratch, then u run the risk of losing the entire set of photos.

it is better to save photos on DVD/CD using multiple folders (without zip). this makes reading the disk much faster than if all photos are saved directly in the root folder of the disk. thubnails are also generated only when a folder is opened and for the photos of that folder only.

I have an optical disc copy for my important pictures and videos. Also a copy in the system. Never used zip files. I feel it is a bit risky to do that. I use Picasa to locate them. So thumbnails wont be a problem.

Very nice advices in the posts above.

    1. Group pictures as per a theme, event, dates, etc.
    2. Create a folder for each group and move the pictures in the folders accordingly.
    3. Burn these folders as is on CD/DVD. Don't zip them.
    4. Make duplicates, just in case.

And if you do have to zip them, better use winrar with recovery record option. Compression can be useful for bitmap files, incase if you have them.

i keep them in hard disk which makes the cmp slower, but the other way sometimes i do save them in cds.

saving many images on pen drive will heat it up.

For now, I just keep them in their sleeves in a box in my garage.

But in the future there might not be any way to print these since
everything is going digital. So to archive these negatives you need
to scan them into digital formats.

yes i do the same thing too...

but i dont know where really we should keep the pics..i mean when we keep in comp., it takes part of its hard disk making it slow..

similarly if we make it on cd/dvd it will take more time to access it..(however, its still very safe) cd/dvd reading takes time too..

on pen drive the temprature rises if save much files on it... specially during file sending and taking...

pls anyone with genuine answers pls....its a serious matter,, how can we save our time and also make it handy, with the thumbnails veiwable all the time, loading easier and faster...pls pls pls pls

You can use Picasa to avoid thumbnail issue. Also it allows you to store pictures online.

yet I use picasa online storage feature quite often. the additional advantage is that u can share the online albums with your friends by just sending them the link. saves the trouble and bandwidth of sending photo as attachments to emails.

My Picasa 3 crash every time I try to use it. Had to use Picasa 2 which does not support web access.

When using piscasa, do you have an account with your gmail account? And does this stay private, because i dont want anyone viewing my photos.

I never thought of putting my pictures into folders, i just copy them as they are to CD, would that make any difference?

u need a gmail a/c to access picasa online. while uploading u can specify whether the album would be public or private. u can then send the url of the private album only to the persons u want.

creating folders and then copying would make the system read the CD/DVD much faster.

If you create a separate partition for pictures, then its the best option ! Causes no performance issues with OS.
